growing cakes on side?
    #22428504 - 10/24/15 05:55 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So I noticed that there was a decent amount of water that was settled against the base of the cake on the tinfoil, and so I decided that since standing water would produce bacteria and other bad things to change the set up. I put them on their sides instead and re-watered the perlite. I placed them on canning jar tops on their sides with holes in the lids(prevent water buildup on bottom). I also noticed some cobweb type growth on the bottom? Would this just be mycelium or cobweb mold? It wasn't greyish or anything.

Don't know without seeing it... If there was uncolonized substrate and it grew really fast and is very sparsely spread out (as far as the mycelial network) it could be Dactylum (cobweb).

As far as standing water, why not just put vermiculite underneath it (a thin layer).

This should help prevent water pooling up underneath.

I guess its kinda hard to see the web, its pretty small. If it is anything I caught it early. Any tips about this set up would be much appreciated!

Ok cool thanks. I didn't think so, but wasn't 100% sure.
