What's this white fuzz on my cakes?
    #22428027 - 10/24/15 04:17 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Have this white fuzz growing all over my cakes. Pinheads are still forming but i don't know if its mycelium or what. I incubated at 88F then set fruiting to 78F. Any ideas?

Those are some very happy cakes. It's aerial mycelium. Usually I would say to mist them to knock down the mycelium. But your cakes seem to be doing just fine.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Yeah I hope so.. Is aerial mycelium bad? I have a bonsai tree in the grow chamber and its growing that stuff on its leaves in small spots.. I'm also using a 1gal room humidifier inside the grow tent. I've used monotubs before and never had this happen.. I may have brushed a cake up on the trees leaves my accident

The fuzz is collecting small amounts of water from my humidifier. You can see it if you zoom in

Dude you need to up that FAE if you want your pins to grow to their max potential. You should fan it out a couple of times a day.

Also, what does the outside of the grow tent look like?
If it's totally enclosed, that's no good, your cakes are suffocating in there.

I have a airpump running from the bottom to the top.. Thanks for info about the suffocation. I'll fix that today. Probably buy a stronger air pump.. What FAE?

There's also a fan set on medium to keep air circulation throwout the tent. It's a constant 77.8F without and cold or hot spots

FAE=Fresh Air Exchange

I've never used an airpump before, wasn't necessary, I've always fruited my cakes in a SGFC and have had no issues. I figure why change something that already works :shrug2:

If you're interested in making a SGFC, it's really quite simple. Get a 66qt tote and drill 1/4" inch holes on all six sides 2 inches apart from each other in a grid-like pattern. Then fill up the bottom with hydrated perlite up to about 5 inches. Place your cakes in there resting on a jar lid or a piece of tin foil. Mist/fan 3x a day. And your done.

Yeah I don't have time to be fanning it out.. Air pump gives it all the great air it needs.. It's not fully enclosed the bottom portion is open so there is a decent amount of gas exchange.. But I will buy a better fish air pump. Probably a stronger one

You'd be better off opening your tent... humidity is not really your goal at this point...FAE is what you need...

Incubate at lower temps next time. Try 75-79. You'll get a better pinset. Fruiting is ideal at 75 for me.

Considering spores can survive the vacuum of space, I would assume it's safe to say that mushrooms are on every planet waiting for the right conditions to present themselves. What it all boils down to, is aliens are on shrooms.

You incubate at 75-79.. What is your fruiting temp? I can't get my tent any lower than 77F. I thought you had to a 10degree drop from incubation to get a good pin

Depends on mushroom strain,  some fruit way colder than others.  Most have "sweet" spots like cubensis 72-75.
