'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.

And the empty pot did not remain vacant for long - now occupied by my Astrophytum myriostigma - possibly my biggest cactus.

I have a A. ornatum - it´s a toss-up as to which of the two is bigger - although A. ornatum grows largest in habitat.

:creepylurker:
This thing is just so freaking awesome.  There's no use comparing ornatum and myriostigma, the size difference makes them like apples and oranges.  That is a spectacular plant.

IMO with cacti, having a rootball that needs to be broken up is a sign you've got the wrong soil or have let it go too long without a re-pot.  Non-cactus plants I shake it up just a tiny bit if its compacted really bad.  As far as re-potting cacti goes, I will definitely break up the root ball on new acquisitions that are trapped in a big corky mass of peat from the nursery, get pretty aggresive in freeing all the roots and getting rid of that shit, even if it means trimming and breaking.  I'll usually do it in the dormant period after having the soil mostly dry from the last good watering so the plant will not lose out on any growth, plus that way you can let any breakage heal in the open air before repotting.  I do a little bonsai so I'm not afraid of a good root trimming session, it seems to help really rootbound plants by encouraging new, healthier root growth.

Once my plants are in a mix of washed horticultural sand (riversand), pumice, pea gravel and small sized lava rock then re-potting is super simple.  They never really form rootballs if you re-pot every 3 years or so, and when you do repot most of that stuff just falls right off, and whatever is left on there is not a big deal.  I find I can repot plants that are in a good rock/sand with almost no root damage.  Although they do tend to need to be staked in place for a few months in that kind of mix.

Glad you like it - yes it had totally outgrown its old pot - growing well in it since 2012 - I suppose I have been putting off the heavy work of repotting that mother!!  I had to smash its old pot! Now the roots can grow into fresh soil and I hope for another spurt of growth.
My Mexican desert cacti - which is nearly everything I grow - go into a gritty, limestone-rich soil - emulating as best I can what they get in habitat.  But there are probably as many different soil mixes as there are growers.

Yeah, people tend to use what's local and cheap in their area.  I'd like to find a good local source for crushed limestone.  My plants do fine with my mix but as you said it's nice to try to emulate the natural conditions as much as possible. I really like the clean, large grain sand for drainage though.

I am not bothered too much about cost - but some things are just hard to find here. But I can buy big bags of limestone chips - I bash them up a bit with a hammer, however, to get a good mix of particle size.
