Repotting A Big ´Un * 2
    #22425934 - 10/24/15 05:55 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

My Pachypodium lamerei - a succulent native to Madagascar - had been in the same pot for a few years, so it was time for a repot.  My biggest plant, I have had it about 16 years - since it was growing on my mother´s bathroom window sill.

The old pot was 34 cm internal diameter and height - I bought a 42 cm pot - increase in volume of 65% or so.

Worst part of the job was getting the roots out of the old pot - it was quite stubborn - I ran a screwdriver around the top of the pot, removing some soil and roots, then with my son´s help we lay it down and wiggled the plant up and down, easing it out of the pot.  Sadly we managed to beak off one of the branches.  The pot was almost totally full of roots, so it was high time it was repotted.

I put a few inches of compost in the new pot

then the rootball went in

fill the gap with compost, and top with some coloured stone chips

and job done!

Nice Pachipodium. I don't get what happened there, did the plant fell and broke an arm? if this happened while tring to get it outside the pot, that was bad luck, but, i guess the best way woud have been a drastic breaking the pot with a hammer or so. I mean, that's not nice but it could have avoided the arm losing.
Anyhow, that would be a quite large clay pot to lose.

Thanks for your kind words.  The branch broke off when we had it on the floor wiggling the plant up and down.  But when things like this happen I always wait to see how the plant will respond.  As you say, it was a nice pot that we managed to keep - I have its next occupant lined up !!

"Miracle Grow Blue" color should never be used with plants, even if just decoration. :nono:

Otherwise looks good, can you just re-root the broken branch?

What is Miracle Grow Blue ??  Certainly nothing I have ever heard of, bought, or used ??!!
Isn´t Miracle Grow some chemical fert ??  I would never touch that either.

So sorry, mandrin13, I have not got the faintest clue what you are talking about.

Spanish that is a beautiful plant:super:

I have never even heard of this plant before but now I want one:uptosomething:

Do you not break up your rootballs when you repot your plants? I always do and for me with my OCD it can take awhile before I get it like I want it.

Anyways great job and it looks very happy where it is now:freewilly:

Hi spaceman - glad you like it - it is a very common plant, you should have no trouble finding one - but usually a bit smaller than this.

And I keep my rootballs intact - now the undamaged roots will grow into the fresh soil, should be a good spurt of growth.  Not sure why you would want to damage them - can you explain??

Well I've always broken apart the root balls to give the new soil more even moisture holding abilities. When you buy new plants and pot them with the rootball intact you have 2 different soils there with 2 different moisture holding capabilities so breaking it up and removing most of the older soil takes this out of the equation and help me better know when the plant is ready for their next watering.

Also the simple rootball it's self even if planted in the same exact soil being so compact vs the loose soil will absorb and hold moisture in a completely different manner.

That's just what I've found but with the plants you're working with and the success you seem to have had things seem to be working well for you.

I work with many different types of plants though "more than just slow growing miniature cacti" so it's probably more important for me to work in this manner:grin:

Hey Spaceman - thanks for the prompt reply - I have just tended to keep the rootball intact and surround it with fresh soil for it to grow into.  But I guess this is really a case of, chacun á son gout - do what you are most comfortable with - whatever works best for you !! ??

Yeah, it was a reference to the top dressing rocks being the same color as Miracle Gro powder. The rocks are 'Miracle-Gro blue' (as opposed to sky blue, or baby blue, or whatever else shade of blue)...

That's quite a monster you have there, Spanishfly!

Yep that's what I was thinking:wink:

It just makes me feel more comfortable when I work in this manner. I have some pretty serious OCD so I have a tendency of often over thinking things:nonono:. I do know that breaking the root ball does give me more consistent moisture control from my years of growing but with plants like lophs I would think that you're a lot better off your way which most likely keep water from resting on the roots for a longer period of time:grin:

I do the same thing, personally. I break up root balls when repotting and even in small plants that are being planted out in the garden and have roots just wrapped up all along the edges of the pots, I will even tear off small chunks of roots... Just the way I was taught.

But like is said before, SF, do what works well for ya. There's no denying you are treating that thing right!

I have been prompted by the comments above to consult my various texts on cactus cultivation as to the recommended treatment of existing root balls when repotting.  Expert opinion is invariably to inspect roots, looking for any signs of rot, root mealy bug or other pests.  Cut away any rot, but disturb healthy roots as little as possible, surrounding the rootball with fresh compost.  Healthy roots do tend to form a compact, dense ball.
So I will continue to do exactly what I have been doing.

I've got a repotting or two due soon myself. I might try that approach for myself this go round.
