The State of Hip Hop music?

I am thinking about making my first project in over ten years, been out of the game for a while and wasn't feeling very inspired. I have been catching up with the scene and new artists, I like classic NY underground and Hardcore hip hop, favorites are people like Cam'ron, N.O.R.E, Buckshot Del, Ghost, Doom, mostly old man rap. Some of the new shit I am discovering and liking are artists like Joey Badass, Wale, Smoke Dza, I love most Harlem stuff. I have also been watching a ton of battles like KOTD and Smack URL and really like what Dizaster, Murder Mook, and Pat Stay are doing.
I get the feeling like a lot of hip hop now is less about funky loops and hard drums and more about breaking something different and new which is cool but often times not funky for an old head like me. Rhymes are getting even more focused on complex or witty metaphors and similes and all about I I I. Any opinions on the current state of hip hop and who do you think is poppin right now and why? Should we throw out the formula of loops and breaks and keep pushing or is the essence getting lost in the search for a new style?

I think hip hop is moving in a good direction, definitely in the underground. There's a bunch of independent labels popping up everywhere with great artists. I feel like you would like lofi hip hop a lot, it has the gritty funky loops and raw drums for that old school production sound. The loops and breaks formula was necessary to make hip hop what it is today and I think it all has the essence of it. Some lofi underground stuff to check out:...
and also I make beats we should talk more bout this stuff sometime

One step forward, two steps back. It seems that everytime a new, decent hip hop artist comes out, there's two more rapping about money and coke over shitty hi hat oriented beats and obnoxious synths.

Mark Devlin has a pretty good insight into what's happened. I don't agree with him on every point, but I buy that there was a conspiracy to promote gangster culture, via twisted hip-hop, to fill up the private prisons (slavery) in the USA. The USA has a massive, scarily massive slave labour population.
