So I was curious, and I googled to see who people consider to be the greatest film directors of all time. Here is the first list that popped up. What do you think? Who would you add -- or take away?
Martin Scorsese Alfred Hitchcock Steven Spielberg Quentin Tarantino Stanley Kubrick Christopher Nolan Woody Allen Francis Ford Coppola Orson Welles Akira Kurosawa James Cameron Clint Eastwood Charlie Chaplin Sergio Leone David Fincher Ridley Scott David Lynch Peter Jackson Ingmar Bergman John Ford Roman Polanski Federico Fellini Paul Thomas Anderson David Cronenberg David Lean Jean-Luc Godard Terrence Malick Tim Burton William Wyler Wes Anderson Andrei Tarkovsky Werner Herzog Sydney Lumet John Huston Frank Capra Brian de Palma Hayao Miyazaki George Lucas Billy Wilder Elia Kazan Robert Altman Francois Truffault Milos Foreman Michael Mann Jean Renoir Steven Soderbergh Luis Bunuel Joel Cohen Oliver Stone Tony Tarantino Sam Peckinpah

Darren Aronofsky Terry Gilliam Katherine Bigelow Gus Van Sant Roberto Rossellini
You weren't listing them in order but I was pleased to see Scorcese first. If he wasn't a rapist, I would put Polanski second,

"Stanley Kubrick wasn't a genius who happened to be a filmmaker. He was a filmmaker who happened to be a genius." --Frederic Raphael
My favorite director of all is Stanley Kubrick. I just think he did it better than everybody. His directing style, his creative vision, his technical gifts, and the films themselves I think are superior.
What are others' thoughts about Kubrick? I'd love to know about some different perspectives.

He's definitely in the top few greatest filmmakers ever. 2001 is in the running for greatest movie ever made. My personal favorite filmmaker is Lynch.

Nice list and i do'nt have any objections, but it's certainly missing Derek Jarman(my personal fave) and Alejandro Jodorowsky. And i'm being biased here as few will know who i'm talking about, but i believe that Richard Stanley is list worthy as well; he just has'nt made enough films to make the cut.
I like and respect both Kubrick and Lynch. Both true visionaries. That Kubrick made the list and is so admired with not all that many films is testament to his greatness. That reminds: i've yet to see eyes wide shut. I need to see more ov Lynch's daughters work too. I thought that Boxing Helena was a great directorial debut.

Boxing Helena was indeed an interesting debut. Another great director's daughter who had a helluva start was Sofia Coppola. Lost in Translation was very charming.

Cool post, Rocket. I'll have to check that stuff out. I did look at the Wikipedia article about Room 237 and one thing I definitely agree with is that the Shining deals in large part with the genocide of the North American Indians. I've always thought that and it's neat to see others did as well.

Right on, yeah I found it pretty interesting how many observations and theory's viewers of The Shining have made about Stanley Kubrick's directing of the film. Room 236 was full of details I would have never noticed and I enjoyed it although it did get poor reviews. It was nice learning about the appreciation people have of things I never noticed, and probably never would have like the forward backward superimposition of the film, and its remarkable synchronicity.
The Shining Backward, Forward, & Mirrored
Pretty amazing if it was intentional.

Hayao Miyazaki or Wong Kar-Wai, anyone?
For a list of greatest directors it does seem rather long... not that I know enough about films to make a fair judgement.
