Low pressure sterilisation idea

I just wonder if following would work? The hole problem with pressure is due to the fact, that water evaporates at 100 degrees. What if sand would be used instead of water. Sure it is less conductive than water and sure it should be heated slower than water. But, would placing bags in regular barrel, sink them in sand and heat with propane burner work? What do you think?

The water in the bags will still only reach boiling point then evaporate. The only time your substrate will get above boiling is when all the water evaporates. You can sterilize with steam for 12 hours.

You could potentially do this if you would use sealed jars with no filters. Anything with holes would dry out.
But in reality it would be one big mess. And this wouldn't have pressure, just high temperature. For pressure you need water.

There are no advantages to using sand that I can see. It acts like an insulator, because sand has poor thermal conductivity (0.15 - 0.25) http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thermal-conductivity-d_429.html ; making your propane bill go way up... and your bags would probably dry out, throwing off the moisture content and making the myc unable to colonize the sub.
It would not work for sealed jars because... if they were mason jars the lids would lift and release steam as they are designed to do, any other type of jar would explode from the expansion of the gasses inside the jar...

Jars don't explode, those with single lids also release gas from inside when certain pressure is reached.

Of course they do. No mason/double lids in my country, only single. I have been (re)using them for years, I'm suprised they still work cuz they are pretty rusty.

I'm agreeing with this guy. If were talking about the white plastic ball style lids that a lot of people are using...

Not sure why no mason jars here. I was wondering about this and still am. I've seen those vintage mason jars on ebay, not sure why anyone would buy, mine here cost ~5€ for 10 x 0,75L without lids. I've been saving nutella jars for sterilization purposes but I guess those are the lids that don't seal? Good to know

Lids dont need to be sealed if your lab is fairly clean. You could also use parafilm or filter discs. I use filter discs inside the white plastic lids with ball jars, so they never seal, but the air exchange is filtered.

I would say Nutella jars are a poor choice, since they come with some extra paper sealing from the shop. I believe the key is to find a jar that has some kind of rubber-ish sealing on the lid, may it be single or double. Perhaps the double lids are preferable, but I have not found them in Sweden either. Right now i am working with single lid jars (metal lid), and it seems to be working and tight.
To comment on the original post subject: I would not try to achieve sterilization by reaching high temperature without using a container that´s not designed to be pressurized. I believe it is easier, cheaper and mych safer to invest in a PC than try to build some kind of sand based unit. If the investment is too costly for your operation I would advise you to go with the micro wave teks you can find on this forum.
