"Lights" made mistake, need help.
    #22421622 - 10/23/15 06:28 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So I have been noticing that since I have my light inside my terrarium my humidity gets down to about 70% sometimes. I've been misting extra, and so far my cakes have not been turning blue which I'm glad for. But I'm wondering since I'm not home all day if I can just have the lights on for less time, like maybe only a couple hours. just to keep humidity up? I would fix it, but cakes are already in the terrarium. Thanks

Why are you measuring humidity?  Just mist the cakes more if they're losing moisture.  I do wonder what you mean when you say terrarium though, since that's not what people usually call a good fruiting chamber.

That's what I figured since they were doing fine. Yeah I mean FC, for some reason I always call it a terrarium. I'm currently doing the 12/12 on/off cycle for lights as pf tek recommends, but was just curious if having it on a light cycle of say. 2/22 would stunt growth, considering mushrooms only need a few hours of light anyways. If anyone has experimented with this I'm just curious.

What makes you think they only need a few hours?  I've never heard that.  Why move away from 12/12 after others before you have spent months testing to see what works best?  12/12 is the result of experimenting.  Any more or any less light and the benefits taper off.

My lights have been on a 12/12 timer for the last 12 months straight. I don't worry about humidity because you can just mist them and they're moist again, problem solved.  The conditions in the air aren't important, it's the conditions on the surface of the substrate that matter, and those can't be measured except with your eyes.

Wasn't 100% sure on why I thought they only needed a few hours. I knew they needed light, and 12/12 was tested many times, just curious what (benefits of lowering light time and increase humidity) VS (benefits of 12/12 light and lower humidity) would be.

Don't worry about the effects of the light on the humidity.  You need the light, you don't need the humidity.  Mushrooms without adequate lighting have weak looking small caps and usually don't grow nearly as robustly as they could.  Mushrooms without adequate humidity look like this(if you still take care of them):

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21288129

You can mess with 11/13 or whatever ratio you want since obviously the sun isn't always 12/12 but one of the purposes of the light is to help establish a circadian rhythm in the mycelia, which, like humans, helps it perform its functions in a timely fashion.  12/12 is best for this purpose.

No problem, just trying to break you away from complicating it.  It's all way simpler than it seems at first.
