In mountainous areas of Europe there are signs by the road telling you to engine brake on the (looong) way down

Yeah, brakes can overheat in that scenario so it's best to engine brake.  For most people though, it's no big.  Engine braking does save the brakes, but will wear the clutch a bit more(not much though- proceeding from a stop is hardest on a clutch) and use a bit more fuel.  Brake pads/shoes are cheap and rotors should last a long time(unless you have a ford).  I think the determining factor is how well your car sounds.  If it sounds good, please engine brake.  If it sounds like a tercel with an exhaust leak or an e46 m3, please save us the racket.

I drive a 88 civic hatch with straight pipes,whistle tips, and tons of monster stickers. I try to engine brake as much as possible especially when a lot of people are standing around, it makes me look cool. It's an auto but it has the 1,2,3,D selection I use for accellerating and deaccellerating I try to use my brakes as little as possible.
