pads and even rotors are sooo easy to change
If you let them squeel long enough you will wear down the squealer and then it turns into a lovely grinding sound when you hit the brakes lol

if your really hardcore and live somewhere that dumps thousands of pounds of salt on the road each winter, your brake lines go before your brake pads, thats always fun

That's not really true. I live in an area that salts like a mofo and it's winter damn near from October to May. Lol
Never had brake lines go yet

happened to me, twice in 2 years, first time was the left brake line, next time the other went. First happened when i was parked at an autozone and he put a meter on it, he typed some code in and it floored the break peddle and the line burst. second time i parked at mcdonalds, turned the car off, when i turned it back gone the breaks were gone. luckly all this shit happened parked, id prolly be dead or killed someone if it happened while i was driving

also wasn't much longer and there was a recall for the tank straps for trucks in harsh winter climates for my model/year. took it in, when they pulled the straps off it was so rusted that it took part of the tank with the strap, dumped the gas all over their garage/shop, apparently that was a big ordeal for them, i ended up getting a free gas tank out of it as well. so u might think u get alot of salt but maybe u don't, i live on a hill ontop of living in harsh weather so they dump extra so people don't kill themselves going up and down it

You save gas downshifting less. The difference is negligible anyway, but still
I'm not saying downshifting saves you more gas, it saves your brakes.
But leaving the car in gear while you're decelerating saves gas because of fuel shut off. You don't really need to downshift that much, just keep RPMs over 1500 or so.
---
This is why I won't shift into neutral until I need to. It's not great amounts of fuel, but it does help.
Quote:
I've replicated these conditions with instrumented cars, both with scan tools and with an oscilloscope, measuring the leads leading into the fuel injectors. The signal controlling the injector is a 12-volt square wave. It's pulse-width-modulated, varying from 5 percent or so at idle to around 80 percent or so at full throttle. The higher the percentage of on time to off time, the more fuel. There's one on pulse for every cylinder firing, so the consumption also varies with engine speed (rpm). All vehicles show a short pulse width at idle, regardless of whether they're sitting in traffic at a red light or coasting downhill—at idle—in neutral. (Actually, they use a fraction more fuel sitting in drive at a traffic light, because of the drag in the torque converter, but I digress).
Almost all vehicles show a pulse width of zero when coasting while in gear. Zero, as in there is no fuel injected at all. Yes, the engine is turning over, the pistons are going up and down, the water pump, alternator and a/c compressor are working, so technically you can say the engine is running, sort of. But it's not consuming any fuel. And that goes for automatic or manuals.
Okay, eventually, at the bottom of the hill or as you creep up to the traffic light, the engine finally will slow to idle rpm—at which point the fuel injection will wake up and start adding fuel to keep the engine from stalling. That usually starts at around 1000 rpm, and if you pay attention, you can sense when it's happening as the engine will rev up slightly. And that's when the scan tool or oscilloscope will show injector dwell rise from 0 to 5 to 10 percent. So you're actually wasting gas by putting your car into neutral.

Also see, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy-efficient_driving#Coasting_or_gliding
That's the concept I was talking about.

Yep for sure. A sentiment I shared earlier
Interesting stuff Tho about using less gas in those scenarios than at an idle. I'll have to remember that

my 4 banger 5 speed jeep. not all jeeps are bad on gas. i get 23city 29highway.
always drove straight drive since i could drive. pondered about coasting in or out of gear and how it affects fuel economy for a long time. good info.

I learned on a stick shift... an airplane tug, out of all things. My pops is a pilot and the only way for me to get around the airport as a kid was to either endure car rides with him or learn how to drive his tug. Taught me how to do tings right, though because the damn thing was picky and the clutch would stick causing it to stall. I can't tell you how many times I stalled at the wrong time.... nothing like getting yelled at by the old man for him getting a call from the tower after I had locked it up while crossing the runway.
So once I turned 15 and started driving, driving any other manual car was a breeze. My first car was stick. I mastered downshifting because we have a lot of canyons where I grew up and it isn't safe otherwise. I loved the fuel economy of driving stick, but as I started a commute... it became labor intensive. Now I'm lazy as fuck. Half the time, I don't even remember the drive to or from work.

You want to talk fuel economy... My Ford Fusion Energi is a beast. When I just commute to and from work which is 20 miles round trip, I don't use gas at all. in fact, the first 8 months I had the car I didn't put gas in it. LOL. When I do drive it beyond it's plug-in life of 27 miles, I get 87 miles per gallon. It's insane. There are people that have figured out how to use the whole kenetic energy of the car to get much much more per gallon. I just don't have the time or energy for that shit. I just want to drive my car.

This is a good point. I live in a mountainous region. When I'm driving a curvy road down a mountain, I prefer it to be a stick so that I can downshift. If you are braking the whole way down a mountain pass, you'll overheat your brakes. So many times, I've been behind a car that is braking down hill and you can smell the breaks.
