It's a Yugo.

That's silly man. There is 5 or 6 gears. Anyone who can't instincively know what gear they should be in is an amateur

3 of my 4 vehicals are manual and the one that isn't is my straight line car, but it's also ratchet shift so I still shift it to an extent. You really can't beat an auto for straight line speed.
I only downshift if the speed limit drops to where I need to. Otherwise I just put it in neutral and coast...less revs less gas.

If you want to be really cool, you should shift gears without touching the clutch. If you match the engine speed to the wheel speed, you can slip out of gear and into another without disengaging the engine from the wheels by pressing the clutch.

I dont think people who regularly drive a stick have trouble finding the right gear I dont even have to think about it.

My car has an auto stick shift option and everytime i tried using it It's been a disaster. Like no matter when i time it shifting makes such a drastic change in my speed it seems useless to me.

I have a stick. I downshift to typically third. I don't like doing it lower, I could go to 2nd, but my first and second gears have trouble engaging sometimes so I stay out of 2nd more.
You just have to know when to shift. If you aren't familiar with the car, pay attention to the tach. Economically good shifts are before 3k RPM. You get a feel for it and then you just can feel when to shift by how the car is feeling and sounding. Anybody who does it regularly won't even think about it.
And auto's are boring. You just do nothing the whole time, I could take a nap.

I have 2.73 rear gears in my car, so I gotta downshift to 2nd if I'm going under 18mph, otherwise I'm just lugging the shit out my car in 3rd lol

I just throw it in neutral and use the brakes. I think someone told me awhile ago that downshifting into second or first is not good for the car, and frankly it's just more work.

I... put it in gear? I'm not sure I understand the question.

I've been driving stick-shift ever since I got my license. I frequently downshift when I am slowing down. I've never had to replace brakes in 20 years of driving. I've never had to replace the clutch either.

So you have a whopping 5 years, 8 tops, of experience behind a wheel?
Downshifting makes your engine do a large percentage of the work. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course. Especially in today's world. Vehicles are a disposable industry damn near anyway. But long long term, wearing brake pads is better than using the engine to slow down

I think he means do you have trouble deciding which gear to put it back into if you're slowing in neutral but need to speed up again.
Depends car to car obviously since you figure out how well it accelerates and at what gear/speeds.
In my car I'd probably put it into third if I was going 20,25+ up to probably around 35-40 then I'd hit 4th. Lower than 20 I'd go into second. I never use first unless I'm starting from a stop.

It's more fuel efficient to decelerate in gear, with brakes or not. For most modern cars if the transmission is engaged and going over around 1500 rpm and the throttle is 100% closed they perform fuel shut off. Otherwise you're idling which is not very fuel efficient.

You save gas downshifting less. The difference is negligible anyway, but still

Nah, its been 20 years and 7 cars. I've heard that engine breaking causes more wear and tear. But, I've driven cars to well over 200k miles and never had to replace the clutch or transmission. I've always bought used cars too. Now granted, I haven't ever changed breaks, but my last car was a Subaru, that probably needed new brakes. But, I was able to trade it in for my current car.
