I downshift if I'm trying to be cool (which sometimes I try to be cool in my cool car.) It's really dependent on the scenario though... If you're in 4th and you're slowing to a stop, coasting doesn't make sense and you gotta downshift. I never go lower than 2nd, and 2nd always seems to have strong engine braking. I do try and maintain a safe distance (fuck tailgaters and riding as a passenger in one's car) so 3rd in my little cool car is enough to not have to use the brakes unless you're coming to a stop or close to one. Try not to use your pedal until you have to (i.e. holding clutch in while waiting at a light) which would wear out your clutch master/slave cylinders faster and your throwout bearing, and pressure plate (presumably since these are all connected to that clutch pedal.) Another thing too, which is a common misconception and semi-related: don't coast down a hill in neutral to try to save gas. You're actually using gas just to keep the engine idling whereas if you're in gear, the engine rotates by itself without putting any fuel in.
Another thing: the gears I mentioned may be different for your car but in general, if you're driving a 5-speed with a 4-6 cylinder car, gear ratios are pretty similar and I'd engine brake or coast in 3rd gear, to 2nd gear. Some cars have a short ratio diff, though, for example and the engine braking in these will be more apparent in a higher gear.

Stick shift all my life, and I downshift. I also skip gears a lot now that I'm getting old and lazy. In fact, I've been meaning to make a thread about 'Gear Skippers'.
I often go from 1st to 3rd (city), or 2nd to 4th (country roads), even 3rd to 5th for highway driving.
My VW Jetta has pretty decent gear range...
Gearbangers, FTW...

Depends on the situation. I have a coasting tendency but I also downshift to second (or third) if I think the light is going to turn green. I dont think coasting is an issue as long as you (engine) brake first. The problem I think is when you are still reving and you suddenly engage the clutchpedal you get a bit of a jolt (fast increase in revs) through the whole system.
All my vehicles have been stick shifters

Soon as i see im not gonna make a light i coast in neutral.
If i need to stop in a hurry i downshift and use my engine to help slow down.

When I drove stick, I'd just hold in the clutch and brake to a stop.

I downshift 90% of the time. It's more wear on the clutch and tranny, and brakes are cheaper. Driving a stick is an active experience. I like to feel more a part of the car.
A mechanic once told me that holding the clutch pedal in when you don't need to is putting unnecessary wear on the clutch. So I try not to sit there holding it. Just put it in neutral. He also said that even resting your hand on the shift knob wears the clutch.

You can blip the throttle with the clutch in to ease the transition.
My cars are all automatic now, but i've owned manuals before. I used to do either or depending on my temperament at the moment. If you go through brakes often it might be wise to start engine braking more though. If you go through clutch discs, it might be wise to use the brakes more. Keeping the car in gear, clutch disengaged, can wear out the t/o bearing quicker, but i used to do it from time to time and never ran into any issues.
I miss driving manual, but i'm too lazy to do it every day. It's nice to have a manual weekend car though.

Your mechanic is an idiot. When you press the pedal the clutch isn't 'wearing' as it's disengaged. It does however, have a effect on your clutch throwout bearing.

Your mechanic is an idiot. I recommend finding someone that knows what he's talking about.

isn't the tranny hot tho, so when u push the clutch in, the gears arn't turning, which means the tranny isn't cooling, which scorches the gears n stuff and changes the metal temper/hardness

I doubt you could sit there long enough to have that kind of effect.

I've driven stick my whole life. I have a little jeep that's standard at the moment
Lots of misconceptions, even in this thread, about stick shift.
Downshifting is harder on your tranny. It also makes you use your clutch more. Clutches have a long long life as long as you aren't burning them out with terrible shifting skills, so it's not that big of a worry
"Coasting" makes you use your brakes more.
Down shifting and letting the engine slow you down is very effective, especially in winter conditions
So unless the conditions call for it, I often brake to a stop while city driving with my clutch pushed in. Id rather wear out my brakes instead of wearing out the engine/tranny

so what do u do when youv'e clutched, or thrown in neutral either one, and you've coasted or braked, but then suddenly you need to speed up really quick? do u have trouble finding the right gear and stuff like that? i just imagine stalling the engine out or a huge jolt

Unless you are a crappy driver, the difference in the life span of your clutch/brakes is so minimal as to be a comical concern.

Why would u have trouble finding a gear?
I mean, it's not a set in stone thing, but generally when I'm coming to a stop sign or a light, clutch is in, my foot on brake, and as I approach my full stop, I've already chosen 1st or 2nd and it's as simple as letting clutch out and accelerating when I'm ready to do so

I don't know what emergency situation I would be in where I had to speed up really quick, but I just plan ahead a second, rev match, and put it in the desired gear. I never really have trouble finding the gear

because normally you go off feel and your going 1 gear up or 1 gear down. after you coasted it might be 2 or 3 gear different, i mean your coming out of nowhere basically, sure you can check your speed n shit but im saying in the moment its gunna throw u off because u normally arnt thinking about that, your just listening to rev's 99% of the time
