Fruiting/pinning
    #22421555 - 10/23/15 06:00 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I birthed my BRF cakes just over a week ago but couldn't fan/mist them properly until 2 days ago

How long should it take before I start to see the first pins? And anything I should do to help in general?

*I'm using a SGFC at 80F, with a light on 24/7, and perlite to keep humidity high, in the high 90% atm*

80F is a little hot.  Why is the light on 24/7?

-Stop measuring humidity, it doesn't matter what the number says, mist the cakes when they're dry, simple as that.
-try 65-75F rather than 80.
-12/12 light cycle with 6500k daylight bulb

Ok thank you!

As for fanning, how frequently would you say I should do it per day?

Fanning isn't actually necessary at all.  The only times you want to fan, if you do, are right after misting, to help jumpstart evaporation.  Since evaporation is a pinning trigger, that's the logic behind it, but you could just as easily not fan, and the fruiting chamber should exchange the same amount of air in about 5-10 minutes on its own.

I fanned like crazy when I started out thinking it would help do all this stuff, then one day I just stopped and everything was just as fine, if not better than before.  Fanning can't replace constant passive FAE.

Oh so as long as my FC has holes in for FAE it should be fine?

Also, just curious, how long should I wait for my first pin set before I start to get worried?

Until you see a better reason to get worried, basically.  Could take 2 days, could take a month.  A month is extreme, but it's happened to me.  Two weeks is about as long as I normally have patience for once something's been in fruiting.

Okay, hopefully won't be a month but we'll see!

One more thing, I didn't dunk and roll, just moved them into the fruiting chamber after about a week from full colonisation, this won't stop them fruiting will it?

They will fruit.

Rolling in vermiculite helps creat microclimates on the cake to encourage pinning. Helps but isnt necessary for pinning.

Also, make sure your SGFC is on some kind of prop to get it off the ground, such as some pieces of clean wood on the edges of the tub or a stack of books. It helps FAE to have all sides of the SGFC open to the air in the room.

:whathesaid: generally when that shit happens they love to pin underneath where the moisture will be trapped onto the surface. If you can keep the surface glistening though, that's what will make it pin on the sides. Rolling in verm will keep the surface hydrated longer. It's not necessary, but it makes your life much easier. I'd even consider sprinkling verm all over it or doing a dunk and roll again. You said you havent been properly misting for 2 weeks.. Another dunk hasn't hurt anyone

Thanks for the responses!

So, best course of action, continue to mist/fan OR dunk/roll first?

Continue to mist, dunk and roll in the future, fan if you need to exercise your arms, because that's about all it'll accomplish.

By the future do you mean future grows? Or once I start to see pins?

Future grows.  I suppose you could do it now, but it's more likely to cause contamination since you've had the cakes sitting out already.

After looking at my cakes they seemed pretty dry and the perlite was pretty dry too so I dunked them fro 24hrs and rolled them in verm.

Just wondering, do I need to mist the outside of the casing now? Or just wait until I go to mist the whole FC later?

Mist them when needed. Do the chamber too when you mist..

Hi again guys, I've just harvested my first flush on one of the cakes, but noticed some discolouration on a couple of the stems.

I've attached some photos because I have no idea what it is. Are they safe to eat? Or should I get rid?

Oh no are those blue?  How could this happen?  Better toss them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe
"Hallucinogenic species typically have a blue-staining reaction when the fruit body is bruised."

Learn about the mushrooms you're growing before you harvest them so that you don't see a normal part of them and freak out about it.

I agree.

You really need to research about magic mushrooms OP.

Bluish bruising or blue-green bruising is common to nearly all psilocybin mushrooms.
