UK P.Cyan/lookalikes - ID request (noobie)
    #22421532 - 10/23/15 05:50 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

1st post - so please let me know if there's anything I can do to improve! Quite a few pics - sorry! - but hopefully all relevant!

In my haste to not be seen loitering around a kids playground I didn't spend long ID'ing in the field. However when I started sorting later - there seems to be 2 different creatures here, I'd be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts!

Habitat:
Silvery/grey wood chips

Location:
West Yorkshire, UK.

Gills:
specimens labelled 2A - attached gills (the undersides pic.9 look pretty similar at first - noobie), but on closer inspection: 2A were a rusty/warm brown, 3A/4A were a cooler greeny brown.

Stem:
2A had a delicate brownish stem that split easily, 3A/4A tougher, off white with what looks like bruising/discoloration

Cap:
Again, caps looked pretty similar to a noobie, on sorting they seemed to fall into 3 categories, 2A- looked like slightly over baked biscuits, 3A- more leathery with slight blueing on rims, 4A- more caramel and rubbery looking.

Spore print color:
The all important spore prints kinda confirmed suspicions, 2A- rusty brown, 3A/4A- dark purpley/brown

Bruising:
they were all pretty beat up when I got um, but I'd stick my neck out and say that 3A/4A did show signs of bruising

I guess what I want to know is - was my hunch any good? Have I correctly separated out into 2 different species: the 2A and the 3/4A's. Are the 3/4A's active? AND... is the 2A nasty and should I be telling the local authorities to get somebody down there before some kid starts eating um!?

pic 5 & 6 are cyans, I would only keep the ones that stain blue until you're familiar with the major identifying features of the genus Psilocybe.

pic 11 is a good picture to see the color that Psilocybe spores should be.

This is a mixed collection of Galerina marginata or Galerina autumnalis (poisonous) and Psilocybe cyanescens.

Thanks all! I thought as much! Not good to have those things amongst swings and roundabouts!

Better make a call to parks people or council! :frown:
