Question about falling asleep

Back when i was younger i had these pre sleep "dreams" while i was falling asleep. Basically like daydreaming, where a vision would play in your head. Normally they were pretty long, followed some type of storyline, had audio, etc.
Now, however, I just fall alseep. No pre sleep dreams, just blackness. What gives?

Sometimes when I have a hard time going to sleep I begin to have anxiety and fear about being aware that I was falling asleep, as I was gaming asleep.
Terrifying

As I learned from lucid dreaming there are multiple levels of sleep and it is possible to be both dreaming and awake at the same time, if you aim for it or if you're just really tired and resting (but not completely asleep). There are many ways this can be effected.

I feel like I used to be way more in tune with "vibrations" and shit when I was younger. Now I'm calloused, like a bit thumb. Is it the fluoride?

No, when people age we tend to try harder to rest when we sleep or are more tired when we sleep, this can cause deep, nearly dreamless sleep. I notice that I feel way less rested after a night of strong dreams and so I usually leave them off. I learned to shut them off when I used to have the occasional nightmare.

I wish I could turn dreams on or off; that sounds excellent. I've at least been blessed with practically never having nightmares. However, I sort of understand your trouble. I have a friend who is afraid to sleep at times because he has so many messed up dreams about dying in horrific ways, or not being able to save someone from their impending doom.
Smoking mj definitely has been the thing that's affected my not having/recalling dreams but I think I may have found a way to get more vivid dreams back... It's called reading, folks. I noticed that after reading A Song of Fire and Ice (thank you, George R.R. Martin) for three or four days in a row, that despite smoking just as much as before, I had been able to recall vivid dreams at least while I was still reading.

sounds like you dont dream at all now, these 'predreams' sound like dreams themselves. Try thinking about what you will dream about and where, then you will truly dream instead of it being a black void.

Interesting ideas and experiences can cause vivid dreams. Your friend should look into lucid dreaming. I remember the dream that made me so afraid I told my parents who taught me their trick for dealing with nightmares. I had just learned what tornadoes were, now I wasn't afraid at this point. But that night I had a dream about tornadoes, and one stuck my home, which was horrifying. After talking with my parents I learned you can stop dreams by concentrating on not dreaming before you fall asleep. Back then turning them off was all I could do. But since learning to lucid dream I can just kind of cancel a dream if I feel like it will be a nightmare and just move on to the next one.

This trick works. I'd say learning to lucid dream is similar. You start that process by telling yourself something like "I will dream" before sleeping.

For me, weed completely turns dreams off. Remeron is like a dream machine. I take it sometimes for insomnia and it gives me the most bizarre and vivid dreams. sometimes I'll take it just for the dreams.

Kinda this. Op, i bet your thinking of hypnagogiac images. Basically as you sleep if your mind is in the right state you can almost watch your thoughts, go.from normal thoughts, to flashes of images of what you think, to full blown motion picture dreaming.

Exactly what I'm thinking. I'm going to stop smoking weed for a few weeks and see if it comes back

When i start smoking pot it starts out making my dreams more vivid, but once i smoke daily for more than a week or so it becomes impossible to remember my dreams. Then when i stop my dreams get really intense and vivid again. Weird indeed

Didn't read the whole thread, so I don't know if it's been addressed, but do you tend to smoke weed before you go to sleep these days?

This. When I go through long periods of heavier psychedelic use I notice these images when trying to sleep. Sometimes it's like a full blown party behind my eyelids.
It is really good at creating a scene that displays my emotions at the time. Like if I think of something shameful from my past there will be people looking at me on the back of my eyelids giving me dirty looks. If I think about getting high I'll see someone hitting a bong with a goofy look on their face on the back of my eyelids.
I don't hear the scene.
I've taken a break from tripping for the past 2 months and it has died down significantly. It didn't start up until I was doing lots of psychedelics with nitrous and a blindfold/headphones for a few hours every weekend for months on end.
I've noticed weed made it worse when I first started smoking again after the last tolerance break. As the tolerance has built up the effect has gone down/away.

I smoke a lot before bed and can still remember my dreams, for a while I would smoke one or two pinches and try and lucid dream and could do it every now and then.
