PH in bulk substrate , how to adjust and measure it correctly

HOLA! I'm using oat and barley straw as a bulk substrate for oyster mushrooms , i think my PH is to low and it's giving entrance to molds and thrich ,
i've used PH stripes , but i don't trust them really , i soak up a small amount of pasteurized straw in distilled water and test it ,
also , i use 50o grams of normal gypsum for every 55 drum batch
do you think this would help? what PH woulb be the ideal ?
thanks a bunch !

Ive heard 1 cup of lime per 5 gallons of soak water is best for straw. Yes you want to raise the pH. To what.. Idk. I've always just put 1 cup per 5 gallons

I don't have to much info on what would be the perfect ph but I know at grow shops they sell cheap ph/moisture meters. That might be easier to test with. It would be really interesting though to do testing with different ph's and try to dial it in.

If I dug around for some RR quotes I could easily answer that lol. I might just do that. Got nothing better to do.

You can easily tell the aged kernels from the fresh ones, even in the rain. You can bring it home wet, as long as you pasteurize and use right away.
For straw, add one cup of hydrated lime to each ten gallons of 140F to 160F pasteurization water. This will pasteurize your straw in a ph solution of 10 to 11. Drain after pasteurization, but don't rinse. As the mycelium colonizes the straw, the ph will drop. This high ph at the start helps to ward off the green molds, which seem to consider straw their favorite food. RR

RogerRabbit said: The pH of 12 to 13 is used only for the hot water to pasteurize the straw. After draining, the straw is at around pH 8, which allows the mushroom mycelium to have a head start on the trichoderma that absolutely loves straw too.
Casing pH should be adjusted to 8 to 8.5 for the same reason. It gives the mushrooms a place they can 'tolerate' but trich won't grow in a pH above 8.
Cubes actually like and perform best in a ph of 5.5 to 6.0, but unfortunately,so does trichoderma and penicillium molds. That's why we adjust pH upwards in artificial cultivation. RR
