Questions about drying
    #22418851 - 10/22/15 03:33 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I've spent a few hours reading lots of posts on the forum but still kind of unclear. My fruits are going to be ready either tomorrow or the next day and I have a few questions.

My plan is to put string through the bottom of the stems and hang them in front of a radiator with a fan blowing at them for a day or two, then put them into a desiccant chamber for a few more days

This is the desiccant chamber tek I planned on doing:
http://www.shroomery.org/11271/Silica-Gel-Chamber
Except I was going to put the lid ontop as I read that it speeds it up.

Will cutting the shrooms in half effect potency that much during the fanning stage? Or should I tear them in half to 'not break down the cell walls'?

Also I can't get a dehydrator yet (will have one for my next flush), and damprid isn't sold where I live that's why I'm using silica gel instead.

Does all of this seem okay? I'd appreciate feedback thanks.  :takingnotes:  :mushroom:

Sure I don't see why not. Splitting the fruits does dry then faster and it doesn't matter how you split them.

That should work but the silica gel has to be dried first if it's already been exposed to the open atmosphere more than briefly.

Alright thanks yeah it's actually cat litter lol but it doesn't have any indicating chemicals, doesn't smell of anything and the packet just says silica gel so I'm pretty sure it should be good to use (it looks just like the cat litter in the desiccant section of shroomery).

huh I didn't know they made cat litter out of silica gel:shrug: your plan should be fine fan dry them as much as possible before putting them with the desiccant and you'll be gravy bro:thumbup:

Let me be the first to ask, what does cat litter taste like that you would pre-emptively fear it?

you can get a food dehydrator on craigslist for 15 or 20 bucks usually, i bought an excalibur on there for 100,but after looking at the heating element i realized its about 10-20 bucks worth of parts, i almost emmediately resold it and and built an almost identical heating element with a 3 dollar thrift shop hair dryer, an 8 dollar water heater thermostat, and a few spare pc fans, but in a bigger box, works just as well or better than the excalibur and cost me less than 15 bucks to make...

I've heard enough about custom dehydrators now to get kinda interested.  A drying cabinet would be the shit.

Just build a small version of this solar dehydrator. Our sun is free.

Haha it's not like normal cat litter, it's basically just plain silica gel (I read every part of the packet to check for any chemicals but it seems as plain as it can get). It doesn't smell at all I guess we'll see if it works :crazy2:

I read every thread I could find about using it an it seems to work from what I read. I've made the chamber and there's no way the shrooms will touch the desiccant, just gotta see if it works.

I am gonna look around for a dehydrator, they aren't common things here but I'm sure I can find one, will definitely have one for my next flush in a few weeks.

I'm not gonna dry drugs with UV light, as neat as it sounds.

I'm gonna be out tomorrow for alot of the day so don't want to leave the hairdryer on all day, I was hoping just hanging them infront of the radiator with a fan blowing at them would be sufficient for the first stage of drying, then the desiccant box to finish them off.
