When not fanning do I keep my fruiting chamber sealed?
    #2241862 - 01/14/04 04:07 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Using a rubbermaid and I'm just wondering if inbetween fanning sessions should the top of the bin be put on all the way so it is sealed? Or should I just lay it on top so that some more air can get in?

If anyone can let me know that'd be awesome

I seal mine. Not sure if that is a universal law or anything, but if you case, then it will sure help keep out contams.

I just put the lid on it as usual. You're automatically introducing contams when fanning, but I've never had a cake go bad once it was fully colonized. I had one fruiting chamber that had a bead of caulking around the rim and then the top latched down over the top to make it theoretically airtight, but there really doesn't seem to be much difference.

once it's birthed, just fan and re-seal. just make sure to fan once a day to get that co2 outta there.

yea, that and you'd be introducting a whole lot of contams, unless you live in gods land where there is nothing like that. :-P

That's what the fanning is all about. Fresh air exchange.

Occasionally, when over-humidification is a problem, you will leave a small gap in the lid. But otherwise keep it closed for the reasons those above have stated.
