This was kind of where the situation got me more than anything.
It is an instantaneous (comparatively humane) way of dealing with overpopulation with very little factor of discrimination attached to it, but the idea of it selectively impacting people I don't know and having no real discernible risk to myself actually makes it more difficult -- want to treat the issue as clinical and removed but the protection on the personal side of things makes the act of pressing the button more personal too.

I feel like your sig just became twice as good...
I voted 7373x or whatever hoping that it would wipe out everyone, including me and everyone I've met, but it doesn't seem that's the case.
I thought about it some more and I don't think I would ever press it. The weight of millions of deaths would probably keep me from ever enjoying myself again.
Asante, I feel like you've made this exact thread before? I could be wrong though.

Actually there is an episode of The Twilight Zone with a very similar plot, except that went a bit different than expected (not to plot spoil)
Here every variable is on the table or directly implied.

I would destroy the button. I'd smash it into a thousand bits with a hammer and then burn up the pieces. I'd make sure no one ever pressed that button if it were in my power.
To anyone who would press a mass killing button I have one question. What the hell is wrong with you? It it because its not one person but a mass murder? Is it the idea that when one person dies its a tragedy but when a million die its a statistic? Thats sick and I advise you to rethink you life and the values you live by.

on some level it'd almost be a public service to press the button, because of overpopulation and all the shitty people in the world. but with a million people there's bound to be lots of great innocent people that are killed. IDK, i'd most likely be far too pussy to press the button

no fucking way. lives vs. paper? come on people.
Edit: the ONLY way I would push that button is if I was guaranteed it would kill 1 million people that deserve it(rapists etc) and I wouldnt even ask for the money afterwords.

I'd imagine there'd be quite a bit more than a nights news segment on a million people dropping dead simultaneously, much less multiples of that. Especially if it was all the same cause of death (heart attack, instant death, suicide, etc:). People would be losing their shit at the 'coming of the end times' or the Rapture or terrorists or whatever other doomsday scenario they have in mind.

I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

I'd wipe us off the planet like a cumstain. Not for the papers, though.
But that answer is hypothetical, of course. Both parts of it.

I choose 7,376, Might aswell kill 7,376 million people because that will solve the population problem of this planet.
Then I could be rich and drive around in nice cars till my body rots and dies, so it become 7,376 million plus one.

I wouldnt press the button . The deaths of any one person caused by another , is enough to go crazy.
You would have no quality of life you would just end up offing yourself.
Now if I could choose the million I'd press it once.

we are talking world wide according to google 2 people die every second and it mostly goes unnoticed that's 172,800 a day across 196 countries sure that's still a long way from 1 million but 1 million isn't even 1% of the world poputation

Well, the value of life (According to the EPA and U.S. Transportation department and some professor and Vanderbilt University) is around $9 million. This situation is quite a rip-off. So basically for every person I kill with this button I am getting one nine-millionth of their actual value.
I can twiddle the thought of pressing it once or twice, or never. Depends on the day I suppose.

There is no "actual value". Bill Gates would give everything he owns to save his life while a methhead in a pinch would pop his ass for a teaspoon of shards. A psychopath would pay for the opportunity to kill and get away with it, a la Hostel.

Funny thing allegedly hostel is based on a website, that provides user's with a five star getaway from home and the lae, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot someone in the head.
Iirc eli roth said it was only 2000$ or at least i remember it being frighteningly cheap.
