The Red Button
    #22416886 - 10/22/15 06:02 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Ding dong! Your bell rings. A man in a black suit has something for you: a box with a big red button.

He explains you what it's about:

"I'm going to leave you alone with this button, tomorrow at the same time I come pick it up again. You can press the red button as often as you like or not at all. On the exact moment you press the red button two things will happen: one million people whom you absolutely do not know will die a quick, swift death. It will be people from all over the world and their only selective criterium is that they are people who are not your family, friends and acquaintances. At the same time, one million dollars will be added to your bank account. It will be a legitimate payment by the government, there won't be any tax investigations or other inquiries. The only thing you will know from the other side of the equasion is that it will be in the news that there were suddenly a lot of unexplained deaths. The button has never beenn used before you and it will in fact be destroyed after it is retrieved from you. No human being will ever connect it to you in any way, no police, no trouble. Again, you can press this button as often as you like and for each pressing a million dollars get put into your bank account, no taxes, and a million people die, no hassle. No further such actions are planned but if they are, no matter what you choose you and the people you know will never be among the deaths. See you tomorrow."

He leaves, the box with the red button sits on your table.
Waiting..
24 hours.

What will you do?

.
A million for a million. No strings attached. How often would you press the button?
You may choose only one

I'd put the thing on the table and probably go mad progressiveley over the next 24 hours.

No idea what I'd do.. I hope I won't press it.

You got 24 hours to think about it, don't have to decide just now. Just decide before 02:02 PM tomorrow our time or you lose your chance.

If you live somewhat modestly, you could live purely off the interest of having $1-1.5 million in a bank account.

Or in a developing nation you could live like a king off that.

If you want to catch interest its far better to, for instance, buy government obligations from Switzerland or another stable affluent nation.

I I had a million I would still live in a very cheap house, I would do well with that much money because honestly I am not a huge fan of money, often times I have so much of it because it doesn't buy me happiness, and I only try to spend money on groceries when I absolutely need them.  Money bores me.

I wouldn't push that button though, I couldn't live with myself if I did.

Money means very little to me. Money cannot buy happiness and the love of $ is the root of all evil.

Is it simply people I've never met, or people I have no connection to whatsoever?

As in, could it be friends of friends or distant relatives, or does it have a certain degree of removal from the person hitting the button?

That said, it is probably problematic that my line of thought when looking at the options was a lack of concern over how much money I would get, but rather how many clicks it would take to reduce the human population to a level that eliminates or counteracts some of the impact the human race has had.
I'd not hesitate to press it for free if it transported the same amount of people to a new habitable planet, but included the chance I would never again see someone close to me.

Good to specify, its people you have met, as in personally meet. Basically your family, friends and aquaintances.

I would press it till the guy who comes to take it dies, then keep pressing it. Hell I'd put one of those water filled birds that dip up and down over it so it would keep pressing.

But you have met him when he delivered the button, so he is immune.

Now I have a new dilemma on my mind:
Would I personally deliver such a button to a person, knowing that doing so immunized me individually from the outcome?

question how many people normally die worldwide in one day?
does the button press add to that number?

personally I think overpopulation is the biggest problem today
would I push the button, I'm not sure
it would certainly be easy to do
but I don't think that is enough money for those consequences
1 person = $1 I think you can do better
what if 1 person = their life savings or their price on the black market

Well then, in the case that he is not immune,
then I would want to click it enough times to ensure he never retrieved it
and use my newfound income to usher in a reign of terror
where those who do not serve myself and my regime of friends and family
will live under constant threat of the button.
:evil2:

Okay, not really. Though I would at least feel less issue with being the one delivering the button to someone else now.
