generator from fan and alternator?

Had the idea of attaching a fan to an alternator. Idea is that the fan is plugged into an outlet thats routed into a battery (power inverter of course) and fan turns the alternator that charges the battery and essentially just runs on itself. That should work right? I do have a spare alternator ive been wanting to play with. Just will it put out more energy then it needs to power on. Be cool if it did. Thoughts?

you won't be able to turn the alternator...
that general concept can get you energy but anything small and it's peanuts
if you have a stream with a current however and build a generator with a large enough wheel
that would do the trick

Which power source turns the fan? And what kind of fan are we talking about? The basic idea sounds like a windmill as micro points out.

the battery would turn on the fan (like a typical blower fan in a room), the fan would be face to face or on a belt connected to alternator. The alternator would charge battery once it starts turning. But everyone here thinks it wont work..
You know, ive heard using a lawn mower and alternator works.

No. The battery can't turn a fan and charge itself at the same time. The fan requires a constant force (battery power) to keep spinning because of friction in the system. Air moving away from the fan is also carrying energy out of the system. And then there's the alternator...
Basically, the system that you're imagining does work without doing work. That can't happen.

Yeah, that's a classic perpetuum mobile and that won't work.

This one may work depending on the fan used and will convert energy from fossil fuels to electricity at a very low efficiency.

airplanes have something similar
there's a ram air turbine used to generate power in case of an emergency
in your system you'll get back EMF I'm sure you could easily isolate using diodes or some shit
still, don't confuse yourself into thinking that it is a closed system
there's energy loss in the form of heat, motion, etc
