Broken jars?
#22416346 - 10/22/15 12:44 AM (8 years, 3 months ago) |

So prior to my recent mod i would brake a jar every 3-4 cycles it would always be a fracture at the bottom of the jar most likely from them clanking together during the boil. This is after 10-20 cycles as i exclusively do jars. I've been putting 1-2 rubber bands around my jars to stop the clanking against each other and have since had no jar failures. I'm using 18 qt presto PC. Just wondering if im the only person with this issue or what....

I've had the same problem. I solve it by loading the PC and then wedging wads of tinfoil between everything. I may have to try your rubber band solution.

i quit using jars, and making spawn for a few months too, after I broke about a dozen while shaking. now i just use bags for hard stuff like oysters, shiitake, and ganoderma.

If you've got the PC-head room, try using a riser in your cooker to get them outta the water more so there's less rattling. Its also better not to have them directly on the bottom of your PC over the flame. And your sterilization will be more effective.
I occasionally have 1/2 gallon jars break in my aa930, which is most likely from heating them up or cooling them down to fast. Seems like the 1/2 gallons are more brittle then quarts anyways. Make sure your giving them adequate time to cool in the PC before opening the lid.

There is something wrong. Ive been using the same jars for 5 + years, and only 1 has broken. What brand of jars are you using? One tip; Dont let the bottoms of the jars touch the water in the PC.

I have no choice in my presto 18qt for the jars to be in the water on the spacer rack. Im using mostly ball jars which seem to be thicker than my kerr jars, although the kerr jars have less graphics and easier to see inside.

When it happened to me I broke three jars within a week (while shaking, scary!) shortly after buying a new case of 12. Pretty sure the whole case was faulty. But now I still do the foil thing out of.... habit? superstition? paranoia?

Some will hate me for saying this but I recently gave up jars. After repeated heating and cooling glass can become fragile. Instead of spending time washing jars I found it to be much more cost effective to switch to small bags. Not only do they not break into dangerous pieces, they hold much more grain per container allowing me to inoculate three to four times the amount of substrate per container. If you are going to use bags to grow out the substrate one bag of spawn for 50-100 bags is not going to make that much more an impact on the environment.
One day I was shaking jars in the lab and the glass broke and slit my wrist open This can still happen even if you are banging it on something. I passed out in my lab and woke up in a puddle of blood with enough time to get a neighbor to help me. From that time on every time I picked one up I would get nervous. I hate glass.....

I had a similar incident with a 6.5 gal class carboy brewing. It shattered in my arm and cut my wrist and all the tendons and my ulnar nerve My house looked like a murder scene is what the EMT said. Luckily my wife was home and my son was sleeping, trip to the ER, surgery cutting me from my wrist to beyond my elbow and 60 days leave. I have limited use and sensation on my right hand and i'm righty. Needless to say i've swapped to stainless fermenters. I realize jars can break but typically i don't need to bang them if i use as soon as they colonize. Since the rubber band mod about a month ago i haven't had a single break hopefully it stays that way. Between the boil and clanking the jars together when handling and transporting they get weaker with every clank, the bands solved the issue for me. One day id like to swap to bags for spawn, i really need a flow hood, i've tried using my glovebox with bags and its too awkward.

Fuck dude. You need a flow hood asap. Especially if you're building a grow room.
Until then you could knock up bags in your glovebox using LC/syringes.

This is good to know. From now on I am going to put on my long wristed insulated rubber gloves when I bang my jars against the carpet.

Trust me its on the list. I just dropped $400 today on the grow room supplies so the hepa and AA941 will have to wait a few more markets. Im buying all the things i need for a large scale even if i'm struggling pressure cooking 7 jars at a time. My main issue with bags is sealing them. I have a nice impulse sealer but 3-4 bags and the sealer it gets really cramped in my glovebox.

I see the concern. I feel like plastic reusable jars may be a happy medium. I really like glass though. I'm probably one of the few people who still uses those nice large glass pyrex Petri dishes too. I do use 4t bags for grain masters with success, and as lips said, they can fit 2-3 times the amount of grain as liter jars. And you won't get a chance to kill yourself with shaking bags.

Never buy from scientific laboratory sites, it's always overpriced.
Offtopic but, I also use pyrex glass petris 90mm diameter, I would never change them for plastic ones.

Sounds no bueno. If its within the suggested weight load, i would call the manufacturer. Thats really not supposed to happen as long as everything is rated for the weight you are using. Be safe and cautious; being broke and having no mushrooms farm is better than having money and a farm, but being crushed and ending up with permanent physical damage. Thats why alot of ghetto rigged setups scare me. Careful out there!

In the 5+ years that i have owned the glass dishes, i have saved alot of money over purchasing plastic ones. Not to mention better for the earth with much less plastic in the landfill, no shipping pollution or pollution from the processes used to create and package the plastic dishes. But i dont deny the "ease and safety" of plastic dishes, and i use the 3 section ones once in a while.

you should have seen my first grow op. damn near killed me and the old lady trying to dismantle it, so I bartered with an illiterate drug dealer/contractor to do it for me. 10ft stacks of cinder blocks supporting conduit shelves- WTF was I thinking!? with rope lights woven in between the pillars of blocks.

Yea I was just looking at their bags, but man a $14 Fedex shipping charge for 50 bags seems outrageous. Anyone know if you can fit more of these bags in a PC than the quart jars? I've got a small 19qt presto that will hold 7 WM quarts with 4 or 5 1/2pts on top laid down sideways. If I can fit more bags in that would be awesome.

Why quart bags? Just get medium or large bags and do two bags per load. And with the shipping cost try adding more bags to the order it may be more effecient per bag if the shipping stays the same.

I'd rather have 7 different qts of grain spawn than 2 6qt bags of spawn. Let's me run more variety. The s/h charge only bumps up a $1 for 100 bags, so it does make the shipping more cost effective, but as a hobby grower I' not trying to spend $100 on bags at the moment. Need to price out some of the shroomery sponsors.

they are the only US dealer of saco2 bags. unicorn doesn't make bags that small, the 4 series is the only thing that comes close. they are sold to hobbyists as 'small' filter patch bags. holds about 2-3# of grain.

Everything mushrooms has 4" x 3" x 18" unicorn bags with .2u filters for $0.60 each if you buy 50-99. With $8.85 shipping for 50. They are the same price as the other size bags though. I think out-grow usually has these as well, but they only have them with 5u filters right now. I had a couple of these when I was gifted a few 1lb bags of spawn. I was able to reuse them twice before the bottom corners got pinhole leaks that I discovered while rinsing out the bags after use. I don't recall exactly how much WBS I got into the bag, probably 2qt jars worth. The original 1lb of spawn that came in mine left alot of extra room in the bag.
