Hey yall this is what I'm about start, if any steps missed or tips would be great!using wbs in quart jars, soaked, etc. for sub using 50/50 straw/cow compost. pasteurize together with added hydrated lime. Question...do I need to dry out cow compost really well first like I would manure? I won't need to add verm to it will I cuz I don't have any coarse verm! Thanks everyone!

Are your jars are fully colonized?
Do you have any vermiculite at all? It doesn't need to be course. Verm should really be in every grow.

No colonization, I actually haven't started anything except wbs soak. I do have verm, not sure if fine or medium, just labeled horticulture verm. I've read to use only coarse verm and I ordered some but won't be here for a while. So u think I should just go ahead and use it? Is ratio close to 1/5 verm to cow poo? Thanks again

sucks you read that. fine verm is actually recommended over course. it holds more water because it has more surface area.
are you planning on putting spores on your WBS? or are you doing agar?

funny u said that Munchauzen, seems that way most everything. Some say never use a particular thing while others say it won't work w/out lol! I think I saw it on youtube for a popcorn tek, but whatever. Ya I'm gonna use my only syringe of spores then use it to g2g more. Think my straw/cow compost ratio 50/50 and my compost/verm 80/20 ratio sounds good?

I wouldn't trust those youtubers. I've watched tons of videos and most of them have pretty bad information and/or techniques. Many people say Shroomery is very dogmatic, but honestly, this particular forum hosts the best information on mushroom cultivation you can find.

Please lets not start another one of my verm flame trains. You do not need verm, there are many ways of cultivatin that do not use it at all. However, I do think it makes it easier to balance water content and texture, and I do think it's a good thing to use when you're starting out, and moreso with some substrates than others.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

I love verm if a substrate is a little too wet after pasteurizing, or any other time I go overboard with the water... it's pretty handy.

Not sure where your getting that info, if you goto ebay and type in horticultural vermiculite, many sizes are considered "horticultural verm." This includes size #1, 2, 3 and course, in other words, just about any size can be considered hort. verm.

I don't consider myself a youtuber, but rather a shroomery member that chose to host my vids there for ease of posting.
Back to verm... The "horticultural" verm that comes in this bag
Is fine grade

Fuck ebay?
But no seriously, all verm that i have seen that says "horticultural" on it is fine verm. This is my experience. Take it or leave it.
