growing oysters..

I just bought some fresh texas oyster mushrooms from the mexican super store and plan to toss on agar and LC. Its not pure white oyster, its grey on top. Went out to the ranch and collected a bunch of hay as well. Currently have my agar, which has been in the fridge a long time, cooking on the stove. Have never grown edibles before, but it looks soo cool. Inspired by Azurs straw tek above, i really wanna try this. It is ok to use store bought oysters to start with no?

Many commercial growers keep their cultures need senescence. I personally tried cloning oysters I bought from Sprout's farmers' market, and they fruited very poorly on some bottles. You could always try taking a spore print and starting from there.

I cloned some chinese grown oyster purchased from a local hipster market. That shit is the most vigorous mycellium I've ever seen. I mean I had it on agar plates in a pint pp5 containesr, and that shit climbed all the way up the walls looking for moisture, got rolling faster than anything I've seen, puffed up. Had some issues growing it, but that may have been my straw prep.
Anyway, I had grass seed oyster spawn sitting around negleced in a screw top pp5. That shit grew into the threads then fruited through the lid from straight grass seed. LoL Makes me wonder if some v-tek bottomwatering type thing might work with oysters.
Guess they don't spawn it out as much as possible in China.
BTW, anyone aware of oyster metabolites that look like strawberry jam? I assumed it was mold of some kind but it didn't seem very pervasive or like it was really growing on anything.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

ill be going some research, but pretty sure ill agar the bottom of some pint jars and go from there. I pretty much only make jars 1.5 pints and up anymore, so ive got plenty of pints to use. Was thinking of doing that thing where you agar the bottom of the jar, then toss grain over it once its used. Ive seen pics of people using laundry baskets and stuff. It looks soo cool, im really excited. About to hit the grow log section and search function

If the culture is viable than its exactly what they are producing at a local grow op. When you cut your fruit dunk it into some 3% h2020 to sanitize it before going to agar. 1/2 pints are best for agar work besides petri dishes. It may take some time for the culture to recover but many of our cultures have been passed around and propagated for many generations with little to no degradation. Give it a shot fruiting and see how it does. Make sure your "hay" is actually straw like golden in color not green. Transfer wedges to WBS/milo/millet jars then spawn to straw. Oysters tend to colonize fast and even from a single wedge a whole quart will be colonized in a week. Pint jars should be even faster. Pre soak your straw and pasteurize between 140-160 and you should be good. Pack the straw into bags, cheapest method is snag some bags from the grocery meat or veggie department as there food grade then make some slits in it for GE and fruiting holes. Tons of FAE and 80% Rh and your golden.

Yes, I had a small spot of deep red metabolites on some wood mulch in a bag of pearl oyster. And before someone chimes in. No it wasn't lipstick mold. I've had that too

always flame sterilize a blade. alcohol sanitation is sub-par for sterile work. sanitize ≠ sterilize.

I like to dip it in alcohol then light it on fire.
Not really sure why you'd need peroxide to clone inner stipe tissue. It is agar after all

Multiple baths of sterile water are a good way to clean up wild fruits for agar work. (grocery store counts as wild ) I've also heard iodine

ya, I've never heard of using peroxide, but iodine I have heard of, and have tried. The biggest con of iodine is it stains very easily! You have to be super careful with it, as it will stain even low-porous surfaces like corian.

I use a automatic propane blowtorch to get the blade cherry red. I wipe with alcohol before torching to clean off any crap so no carbons get burnt onto the blade. Lighting the alcohol on a blade dipped in it won't get the blade cherry hot.
