Old spores still viable?
    #2241503 - 01/14/04 02:09 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Got a friend at another community that asked a question - I told him I'd check with you guys. Here it is:

Has anybody had any luck/experience inoculating mushroom spores that are a year or older?

Anyway, I had a dream that some one year old majic spores fell into a petri dish of agar medium, and within 5 days growth exploded, but no rhizomorphs had developed yet. The spores had been stored in a dark cold closet for a year. In dreams to come - should I expect food of the gods, despite the age of the spores?

In previous dreams - tomentose (unviable) mycelia took weeks, maybe months before showing their cottony powder puff tails. I was expecting - no hoping, for failure so I could throw the prints away. But now I'm starting to get my hopes up - should I be?

People here have had success with spores 2 and even 3 years old.

The conventional wisdom says they last about a year, however if any of us gave 2 shits about conventional wisdom, we would have a different hobby.
