Armillaria ostoyae--THE HUMONGOUS FUNGUS?
    #22414931 - 10/21/15 06:23 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I'm pretty sure that these are Armillaria ostoyae. I'd like to know what others think, because this is the first time that I've ever encountered this mushroom. It's not really talked about in any of the books that I own either. I'd like to try eating them, but I'm still on the fence.

Location: Southwestern Washington. Growing near doug fir, western red cedar, beaked hazel, and hemlock. Some were growing from logs. Others were on the ground--probably growing out of tree roots. There were a lot of them.

Spores: White

Odor: There's a smell, but I don't know what to call it.

There seems to be some brown coloration after bruising. Base of stem has a yellow blush.

I agree with you, but take a look at Armillaria gemina too. http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/armkey.html#gemina

According to mushrooomexpert.com and the link that you presented, the geographic range isn't right for A. gemina, and it's rare. It also tends to grow on hardwoods. There are some maple trees in that forest, but the mushrooms weren't growing near them. They were growing around the conifers. It would be great if it was A. gemina, because it's maybe not parasitic. But, it's doubtful.

Update: This was in fact Armillaria ostoyae--The Humongous Fungus. I took it to the local mycological society for identification.

I wasn't fond of the taste. It reminds me of Vienna Sausages, those little wieners in a jar.
