Habitat: New York. Huge dead Oak, with additional satellite masses of mushrooms seemingly growing off of roots, 2 -3 feet from main mass.
Gills: Adnexed (see photo).
Stem: Solid stem, 10cm and up, Cap: 4 - 10cm, dry, with rolled edge, prominent veil
Spore print color: Pending. Probably white.
Bruising: None apparent
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, farinaceous.

Thanks in advance.

Edible??? Jeez. The mass of mushrooms is not to me believed. What is depicted is about 1/3 of what is there. I was too lazy to clear the brush on the OTHER side of the oak to take a picture.
Those could feed my entire neighborhood!

A. mellea is generally regarded to be inedible. I say generally because all the field guides/reputable sources will say it's inedible. But you can find accounts of people cooking and eating them in Russian cuisine. They're not deadly, at any rate, but lots of people can get sick from them. Kind of a shame, since the suckers grow like weeds!

I eat them all the time. But then I'm hardly reputable.

If you do regard them as edible (which I do, with the caution that they need to be cooked very thoroughly!—and the acknowledgement that some people do get sick), those specimens are way past picking. They should only really be harvested when very young.

I agree, they are long past their prime, but the ID is still very important to me because I'm learning to forage for the first time this season...so thanks to all who chimed in. I'm pretty sure I've seen this mushroom in at least two other places where they're just right for picking. I've not picked them or even asked for an ID before because I just figured they were inedible...but this lot was so impressive I had to share.
This grouping was so massive I actually saw it from my car when I was driving to work! Was probably going 45 - 50mph when I passed it!

when they are young and fresh they are delicious, also the stems can get really meaty, a bit like scallops
and they have the tendency to crush whatever tree/decaying wood is in the area with massive clusters sometimes, feet high and across when they are really growing

My National Audubon Field Guide calls them a choice edible, with caution. It seems some folks get gastronomic upset even when the mushrooms are thoroughly cooked, which is recommended.

When the mycelium is actively growing, it glows at night. It's called foxfire.
