The Quest for the Physco-Active
    #22413926 - 10/21/15 02:22 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hello there,

This is my first post, so go easy on me!

This year I have decided to make a real effort to find some shrooms! namely Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps). I have so far spent hours this mushroom season both researching and scouring the fields of near by national trust sites (I'm in the UK). Its took a while, but a few days ago I finally found a decent(ish) haul of what I'm quite sure are Libs, 17 to be exact, which I'm quite happy about but of course I want to find some more...

So I have some questions for you seasoned hunters,

Firstly, how often will shrooms grow in the exact same spot? once a year? or will they pop up a few times a season? My understanding is that the mycelium fruits to create the actually mushroom, so how often will this happen per season? (sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, I'm still learning)

Secondly, the Libs I have already found were mature, so a nice light brown color and quite easy to identify, Today however it was very wet, and I found what could have been Libs but they were a lot darker in color, I understand this happens when they are particularly moist, so a picked a few a put them in my pocket to see if they would dry a lighter color, which they did, but I was still not 100% that they were the real deal, so I chucked them (I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE TOOK SOME PICTURES)

anyhow after that long introduction here is the actual question, Is there any nice tricks i can use to identify moist Libs?

Finally and very quickly, I have also found what I'm 99% sure is a fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) which is about the coolest looking mushroom you can find, anyhow I've done my research as to how to correctly prepare it (simmer at 80 degrees for 30-60 mins etc) but what are peoples thoughts and opinions on these things.

Thanks Fellas, Give me some info, anything!

Juanamara

Photos on this forum is the number 1 best trick for IDing shrooms.

Some people seem to think that the muscaria experience is worthwhile, but I've yet to hear anyone say they positively enjoyed the experience.

Pretty sure they pop up constantly from end of summer to the first hard ground frost. This year if we're lucky brits that could even be as late as early december!

Libs have a unique shape and are transparent ish when wet. The nipple looks really alien whilst wet as well. They tend to grow in clumps so if you find one, look around you within 6 foot or so.

I strongly would not recommend amanitas to a beginner, start with liberty caps until you're absolutely sure you wanna do muscaria. I've heard a lot of people say they didn't enjoy it and you wouldn't want psychadelics to be ruined to you over 1 bad trip.

Also please never smoke any mushrooms
