Mirror Neurons & Depression Treatment * 1
    #22413045 - 10/21/15 10:12 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

It's no secret that the moods of others tend to affect our own moods.  Being in the company of grumpy people makes us more likely to feel grumpy, while being in the company of happy people makes us more likely to feel happy.  This common-sense psychological phenomenon may have neurological roots, however, and recent discoveries in neuroscience may be uncovering the mechanism behind it: mirror neurons.

Mirror neurons are clusters of cells distributed throughout the brain which activate upon observing the actions and emotional states of others.  In the journal Behavioral and Brain Sciences, mirror neurons are explored as a potential substrate for empathy.  In what's been termed the "Shared Manifold Hypothesis", early evidence suggests that simply observing the emotional states of others may have repercussions on our own emotional states.

Of particular note, brain imaging studies have detected mirror systems operating in the anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex, two regions of the brain which play a central role in emotional awareness and in generating emotional states, the functioning of which has been implicated as a potential biomarker for major depressive disorder.

There may be a mechanism by which observed emotional states are internalized, such that our own emotional states could be altered by exposure to others'.  If that's the case, it may be possible for depressed individuals to exploit this mechanism in an applied manner toward a therapeutic end.

Yes, that's Spock

Take a moment to study these images.  Does doing so generate any shift in your emotional state, no matter how small?  If so, what would studying images like these for a half hour do?  An hour?  What about a half hour each morning, or before bed?  Could such a simple technique have a measurable role in treating or managing a depressive disorder?
