Supplements?

Hello.
I have a few questions regarding supplements that I hope the experts here will be able to help with. I am growing Oysters and plan to grow shiitake soon. I produce spawn consisting of Barley with some sawdust in it, inoculated with GLC. Seems to work.
The substrate I plat to use are wood chips (chipped branches of aspen and elm right now, planning to try other hardwoods as well). But also logs.
I am supplementing the chips with gypsum, but nothing else. What would be wise to get in the mix? Should I supplement the spawn as well?
I have unlimited access to horse shit (old), compost, and ash (mostly hardwood), if some of those could be used it would be great.
Hoping for some knowledge! Thanks.

supplements are usually things like grains and bran.

Ok. My mistake (bad choice of subject then...) What do you call it when you add for example gypsum?

I consider it a waste personally, it's just calcium sulfate.

i've messed with poops.... yea i have... I don't see much increase in yields with my pinks or phoenix. I saw a shitload (no pun intended) on my reishi with cow manure in the mix. I have however noticed with manures you get crazy high exothermic heat and your logs/pails hit 100F core temp and green mold at the core. If you're using brans anything beyond 5% and not sterilizing your flirting with disaster. Im currently trying out 5% bran with some lipa tek king bags, we will see how that goes. If you're growing oysters stick to grain spawn and pasteurized straw with gypsum, it does well on its own for starters and doesn't need sterilization. Clearly drake is not a big fan of gypsum but it's sort of industry standard to help with colonization. Its cheap and lasts a while used a 5-7% so i use it but i've never done a side by side comparison. Drake have you ever?

Ok, thanks for the good advises. Will avoid all but gypsum then (perhaps even gypsum, would be interesting to hear if anyone made a side by side comparison). Right now I´m trying to get wood chips and logs to work, but might move on to straw it this proves too ineffective. I could add some gypsum to the wood chip mix, but I´m not certain how to add it to the logs when spawning.
I could do a side by side on that actually, if anyone would be interested. plan to spawn a few logs tomorrow, but the result will not show for several months probably.

If you use gypsum, make sure that it doesn't have AST in it. I've seen some post on here that says it doesn't matter, but I have two bags right now, that I'm experimenting with. Both are king oyster. Both made in exactly the same way, but one has gypsum with AST in it and one doesn't have any gypsum. The one without the gypsum, is at least 25% further along. I'll try to get pictures up later.

none of the growers I know hardly use it. the ones that do use it, do it just because they read it in 'that book'. chalk makes a little more sense as a buffer if you're using raw sawdust.

The few decent studies I've seen on it, indicates that it may increase yields by anywhere from 7% to 20%. As a hobbyist, like me, it's not worth the time and effort.

Ok, valuable info, thanks. I´m not sure what AST really is (Advanced Soil Technology?), but I believe my dry wall that I smashed does not have it.
I might try on just one or two logs then, since it seems not very important. Thanks for all your replies.

From what I've read, drywall works well, if you choose to use gypsum. I would be interested to see a side by side comparison if you do one.

One reason I like adding gypsum is because when the blocks are composted, turning into mushrooms compost, it helps in using it for gardening. I add gypsum to my soils before planting, especially in clay soils. I do believe it helps mushrooms production also, through addition calcium and sulfur; both essential nutrients to mycelial growth. Not to mention 50lbs is $3.

Did a side-by side this weekend. A bunch of logs spawned, and two of them with added dry-wall gypsum.
It will be a few months before any conclusions might be made, provided the logs will fruit at all that is.
Without gypsum:
