Silene Capensis (afric dream root) Germination: Should I sterilize(microwave) the soil?
    #22411182 - 10/20/15 08:45 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

There is very little I can find about silene capensis (silene undulata) cultivation in general. Everybody says it should be germinated like a cactus seed: that is, in cactus type soil and sown very shallow. Kept humid as a germinating seedling and then acclimated.

I just got my soil all prepared but now I'm wondering if I should microwave it. I remember I microwaved my cactus soil when I was germinating san pedro cacti, so I must have read about that somewhere. Something about sterilizing it to try to prevent fungal infection or something. I still haven't gotten myself any fungicide so..

Any help is greatly appreciated, even if you haven't grown this species speculation is appreciated as I have very little experience growing plants.

my soil mix is: 1 part perlite, 1 part sand, 1 part potting soil. Shitty potting soil but I've been getting by okay with it so far. (it just really sucks at absorbing water the first time) Some people suggested using compost but I don't have any ATM

I routinely sterilise the compost for sowing cactus seed - it removes weed seeds, insect eggs, harmful bacteria and fungal spores.
I heat a container of moist soil until the internal temperature reaches 180F - using a meat thermometer.  I use a microwave on full power, takes about 3 minutes.  You can use an oven.

right on, thanks for the reply!

should I put the plastic over it right when I sow the seeds you think? for humidity? or when they actually germinate?

I put the seed trays in a Ziploc bag as soon as the seeds are sown. I sprinkle the seeds with just a light dusting of sand.

My seed germinating set up - pair of 20W 6000K fluoros - from a Chinese bazaar - seed trays on a reptile heat mat (from a pet shop) connected through a lamp dimmer to control the temperature.  Only a few Euros for the lot.  Good luck

The cold nights seemed to do the trick with getting my Silene seeds started. I sowed way too many seeds, thinking that they would not germinate and now I have over 70 plants to deal with.

I wish my coleus seeds had been as productive. I have one viable plant out of maybe 40 seeds planted.

Well that first germination isn't doing so hot. It started out upright but is now laying down.

I had poked a few holes in its plastic tent. Other than that I hadn't done anything since germination.

I never used a tent and they were left outside day and night. They do tend to fall over easily and I packed small amounts of soil around the base of those that fell over after spraying and or watering.

very nice :yesnod: I wonder if you can propagate these with cuttings?

Can't thank you enough for help! Not easy to find people who grow this stuff.

I was thinking these plants could benefit hugely from  mycorrhizal fungi since the part you harvest is the root. It would boost growth as well as protecting from bugs, root rot, etc.

And if you pick the right fungi there are other potential benefits like freeze tolerance, drought resistance, all kinds of cool stuff.

I read that you can take cuttings fromthese plants and I will try in the spring. I am just trying to keep everything alive now.

I just got a couple of calea plants, the sweet and the bitter variety. I hope that they will do OK as well.

We'll have to stay in contact to swap dream plant updates/tips and trick. Or I'll at least post in this thread at a later date if/when I find some information on the topic worth sharing.

What sort of plant hardyness zone are you in? I know its an african plant but I read they get through light freezing just fine. Maybe you should consider taking some of those outside, at least in the warmer seasons.

Yes I think they will all go outside in the summer but everything is inside now. I am in Zone 7

I'm in France (south of France, zone 9B), mines are left outside all year long without problem... resist cold, rain, dryness, hotness, full sun, everything !!! It flowers a lot and seeds a loooooot too, keep it far from other plants or you'll get some everywhere (no need to take cuttings !)
