My salvia divonorum garden

Just an intro. I was given a plant harvested of most of its leaves (prepared for cuttings) almost 5 months ago now by another member from here, and also my lifelong best mate (Thanks bro, i know you'll see this) I tried a few years ago with one plant, but i failed, and was always too busy and concerned with other plants to try again. So this time opportunity presented and i managed to squeeze 5 cuttings from the plant, prepared them all for getting roots by laying in water. Here's a pic of the cuttings, in May:

Horticulturalist by trade, i kept a keen eye on all once they had rooted, and as expected the growth tip took off first, and went the best. The lower parts of the stem, did the least of all, with only one cutting not surviving.
So now i've got 4 cuttings, thriving, about to get some serious growth, and boom! they all went arse side up starting with the growth tip, and the rest following except one cutting, taken from the base of the original plant that had only just established as the others were really taking off. Anyhow, so a few months later of more watching, waiting for the cold weather to fuck off and activate the bastards root system she begins to take off. I decided at this point to snap a photo, as i was about to give her a motherload of food. The date i have on the photo is the 27/9/15. Not even a month ago now. Here she was: (never mind the looper damage, nipped in the bud as of a week ago, and on patrol weekly for new damage/eggs/grubs)

That is in a 8" pot. As you can see in the background, there's a small one popping up. There's two survivors, from the ashes. Here's a pic, they've only recently surfaced, so ill give them a chance.

And finally, i took this as the sun was going down tonight. I transplanted immediately after the last photo, gave a brewed worm casting tea and home secret feed. This is the result now, she lives in a 12inch pot, in full shade except for an hour as the sun is going down. I will post more photos as time comes in here, including as we strip her down to the 30 something branches inside, make an extract, and try making cuttings with all the stem as the seasons start to change. So stay tuned, this could get interesting..
Also, any advice would be great. Ive spent years studying horticulture, and years working in various styles of garden and bushland, but this is a first for this species. So im all open ears to anything you have to offer!! i have the best climate, and the best spot to grow it in, so good... Cheers!! simo

Shall snap a distance shot, to give better idea of the size this week, for comparison later..

It's doing real well and you seem to know what you're doing. I grow them outdoors in Victoria and they do well. I get the same looper damage, also whitefly on occasion. Watch out for those. I'd re pot it into something about twice the size that it's in now. It's still got the entire growing season to grow and it will get quite large if given the room.

That's what i was hoping to hear. Will make shift into something bigger as soon as i can get my hand on larger pots.. I really did think the 300mm would be plenty, but that's the shortsighted part i commonly overlook. Cheers bud, oh and i lived down in Warrnambool for a year about three years ago now. I swear it was the coldest, windiest part of Australia.. Peace

Did you ever at any point have plants with leaves that looked like this:

If so, how did you fix the problem? What WAS the problem?

Sorry mate, cant say i have had plants like that yet.
Anyhow, heres a pic, few leaves trimmed off and showing the crazy side branching going on. I could easily take a few of the larger ones competing like crazy and make some new clone plants.. just waiting for the leaves to fill out a little more before doing so.

Goodness. Those are looking amazing. Nice and compact, just how I like to see em.

So i took old mate Karode advice, got myself a new pot. 510mm across the top, about the same depth. its visibly 4 times larger than the one its in now.

Got the pH in the soil stable, fed with worm compost tea, this is how she looks now. Into the big pot in the next few days, i stuffed up buying the wrong potting mix so instead of throwing it in anyway im holding off, going back to get more, and hoping for even more success.

This is still untopped..
No, the trick is catching the plant before it becomes rootbound and potting up into a larger pot, and taking leaves at the internodes to forces new shoots. A good healthy not too heavy feed helps, where i have these guys placed they cop the first two hours of sun rising, and last two of it setting and the rest of the day they are shaded behind the building.
If your not getting side shoots, might be an idea to top.. I take about 30 palm sized leaves every 5 days, and the new ones keep coming it looks the same again 5 days later, they shade the lower leaves, so removing them not only forces branching, but new leaves to grow in place. Ive got branches forming on branches now, im going to have to build some screen device to hold them up in multiple places, cause this plant is going insane.
The constant removal of leaves ive found is draining my nitrogen, im keeping check of pH and feeding organic nutes apart from the sporadic hit with a rich nitrogen. So far, the lime green color is satisfactory for me, as i don't like going overboard like in some of the first few photos i posted a month back.. I will post a few updates soon, just went into the next sized pot, so im expecting a little delay in growth after this. fingers crosses.

Thanks mate, been busy with work and the silly season. Snapped a new photo the other day to give illustration of the size now. Its gone uncontrollable with the branching so much that i worry on windy days its just gonna snap clean at the bottom. Not to worry tho, ive got the two smaller models just taking off finally after 7 months. I took 5 new cuttings, all 100% success rate with roots growing out the bottom.

I started with taking a few, and doing the glass jars inch high with water method to have all fail. I guess they weren't acclimatised to the environment i transferred them to (indoors) I decided to leave the next batch of cuttings out with the plant, in total shade except for a brief half hour in the morning as the sun peeks its way up. Dipped in softwood clonex gel, placed into a pre-prepared hole in the soil they would be growing in once established (with added perlite for drainage) backfilled and watered in. Not a single clone even got a black edge this time, altho a few days there were scorching hot and being gone ten hours a day the best i could do was water before work, and upon returning. They wilted a fair bit, but came back excellent, one still has a permanent bend from the event, but is rock solid now. These are the clones, all ready for the next size pot. More to be taken soon, with all plants cloned from here out being given away. Do not contact me asking for clones, sorry its been a few years since i've re-read the rules but ill brush back up soon and will start looking at available sharing options then.

Wow!
What kind of temps and humidity are they experiencing where your'e at? They are absolutely LOVING the conditions you have them in. Congrats!

That plant is currently going through a hot Aussie summer. It reaches temps above 40C (104 f) regularly.. Couldn't tell you the humidity as my hygrometer is currently not working but it gets pretty high. Sitting in shade 90% of the daily light hours it seems to be loving it there. There's always ambient light, but there is a building that hides it an hour after the sun rises right through till an hour before it sets.
Its looking pretty crappy, I've been harvesting like a bitch taking a good 20-30 leaves every 2-3 days. I'm gonna leave it a little longer between harvesting now, i just wanted to keep the internodal spacing to a minimum and get the most compact little fucker i could get before it hit 14 inches in height. As you can see, or maybe cant, it has about 50 branches, that keep branching. I'm constantly having to trim all the little buds that pop facing back inside towards the stem structure of the plant to maintain outwards growth and a very well orientated branch system.
Have just fed with some nitrogen a few days ago to green her up a little, i am constantly throwing nitrogen based fert at it and it sucks it all up, goes green, then a month later starts to lose color again. Id prefer to stay on the lime green side tho as i have not had a single pest when this is the case.
Quick questing if anyone has the answer.. Is the 2.5mg/gram salvinorin A affected by the size of the leaf? I.e. do more fuller and mature leaves contain the same amounts of salvinorin A as smaller leaves growing for the same time? thx in advance.

I am so jealous of you.
Sally has always been difficult for me to have thrive, and you have almost a tree there.
and no support? normally I've read that the plant can crawl like mint by getting tall and falling over, then rooting from the areas touching soil

Mine do well like that outside in the summer when it is hot and humid. I keep them well watered and out of the hot direct sun or the leaves get burnt.

This is just speculation, I haven't seen any numbers from studies or anything like that, but I haven't noticed any real decrease in potency from smaller leaves to larger leaves. I have never tried any really tiny leaves. My experience ranges with leaves from an inch or so long to longer than my hand....
