This pinset sucks..

There are some tubs where everything seems effortless and looks great. Then I have this tub. The spawn was healthy. Looks healthy. Fully colonized in 12 days and spawned at 100% colonization. I don't know what to do to get a nice pinset on it. I think it's too late to have a nice pinset but I'm tired of picking a few fruits everyday whenever they mature. Ain't nobody got time fo dat. I loosened my bottom holes today, removed polyfil from a top hole 2 days ago. I'm thinking maybe not enough fae. I also turned on a room fan. Wtf? Can anyone help me out here? This is so annoying.

How did you inoculate your substrate and how much spawn did you use?

Looks dry. If you don't case you need them bottom holes dialed in tight and fans are something you should avoid unless you live in a humid climate. Dial in better next time and consider a casing. Casings provide a better pinning platform in addition to a nice micro climate. Prolific pinning genetics sometimes won't need one but with ms I usually rock a casing.

Beads of water are covering the entire thing. My bottom holes have been rock solid tight until today and I figured since one of the main pinning triggers is evaporation off the substrate, I didn't have enough evaporation so I turned on the fan. I've had great pinsets without casings in the past with ms genetics that's why I'm so confused with this one. I've also read many have had great success without casing and that they aren't necessary with cubes unless it's PE or a different species.

They might not be necessary, but they can still be beneficial.
They allow some leeway for sure

It's super dry. The little balls of moisture on the cottony mycelium aren't enough. I would mist it, a lot, and hit it hard enough with the water to make that mycelium lay down flat.
And no go on the cutting of your mushrooms. Twist them and pull them up. Those stumps will most likely rot and contaminate.

Well I misted the shit out of it. The struggle is real though. I guess I still get confused with some of the info I read on this site. Some people say they cut, others twist and pull. I found it pretty easy to twist and pull my PE without messing up the substrate. With these though, they are kinda in there so when I twist and pull, the bring up a little bit of the sub. From my understanding, that exposed sub is prone to contaminate and any stumps left over from cutting usually recolonize with myc instead of rotting immediately since they are made of myc. So which one is it? Twist and pull or cut with scissors? I feel like I need to go back to cakes at this point lmao. I'm feeling hella noobish right now and upset with my progress.

I have had stumps contam on me lots. Rarely do divots contam simply because there are divots. I used to cut. Never again. Its a time consuming PITA.
As for pinset, welcome to ms, sometimes it shits the bed and needs help. Casing is one way to do that. No matter how the tub was dialed in it has the look of a dry tub. Also a casing isn't just for microclimate. Like I said above it provides a better pinning surface. This is for a few reasons.

Alright. Pulling and casing every time it is then lol. I guess my understanding of a moist tub is messed up. I figured beads of water (period) meant that the moisture content was fine. I'll be searching for some pics of good monos to get a better understanding of what my surface should look like. Thanks guys for taking time to help me understand my noobish ways

Today's pics.

Picking instead of cutting. The surface is in great shape.

Thanks Tahoe. Yeah your sub surface still looks great. Crossing my fingers and hoping that my mono won't get jacked up by these stumps
Edit: Your tub has no holes?

I bet you could still pull up your stumps. Just wash your hands and go for it. You will not hurt the surface of you touch it.
There are 4 half inch holes at the surface level. You can see one behind a mushroom in the before picture. I usually don't use holes. Its easier to keep the surface wet for better pin set without holes. But highly not recommended by others

I noticed a difference in RH just changing to a thicker plastic.
That's why I said "JESUS" when I heard someone talk about open air :V
There was a reason they were covered and they didn't have too much CO2.
Though there is something to be said about the ROS.
(I still haven't figured this out but I have some experiments planned.)

Remember varying RH (surface evaporation) can be a big pining trigger as well, open up to much FAE and you kinda lose that. Keep making adjustments, but remember it may just be bad genetics.

Lots of air causes a greater pinset because of the superoxide radicals it produces from respiration which are associated with laccases.
Or is it the other way around? Like chicken and the egg...
That would be funny if this whole time the one thing missing was ordinary household peroxide.
Too great a pinset isn't wanted in cubes anyway. They come out really tiny.
It could be useful for something like morels.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I went ahead and pulled up the stumps. I also see that one hole behind the mushroom now on your pic Tahoe. I remember seeing a thread about no holes on a mono quite recently, just adjusting the lid a certain way for fae. I'm going to be investing in some actual petri dishes for my agar work to get better at finding isolates. I feel comfortable with pasty plates but it's hard to see through them and sometimes hard to get the lids off in my sab. I want to work on storing master slants in my fridge and I've realized that you can't really store pasty plates too long without it drying up. My agar techniques definitely need some work. The only thing I'm a bit confused on is getting the agar in the petri dishes. Pasty plates you just load up with your already made agar and pc. Petris however already come sterilized so would I just be pouring the agar I made into the petri in my sab and leave it to set?

Well. The misting has helped tremendously. This tub is pushing out monsters now. This is the first time I've ever had to removes caps from the stems to get my dehydrator trays to sit flat. Also the first time I had mushrooms so long that they go the length of the tray.
