dirty straw

I bought a bale of straw from Lowes yesterday. Lots of ears of wheat incorporated in the bale. Also there are some weeds, grass, that sort of thing. I wonder if this is suitable for pasteurization, or should it be sterilized like hay?
Also, I did pasteurize some of it for an oyster grow. I had it up to 150F and kept it there for an hour or so. Now I am finding people saying it should be 160. Is contamination going to put the hurt on me? Anyone?

anywhere between 140-150 seems to work. I recently have been dunking my soaked straw into a pail and pulling just the floating straw off the top leaving seeds behind. I know its not necessary but i noticed some of my bags smelt of fermentation when i left all the seeds in. They still colonized and fruited well but i'm just being anal.

I should add that i put all my straw into paint strainer bags, so everything stays in that i put in. If you're dumping loose straw into a pail or pot the seeds will naturally collect at the bottom and sift there way out.

What do you use the paint strainer bags for? To clean the straw? Or do you pasteurize that way?

Well, I read somewhere on here that hay had to be sterilized because the seeds contained therein were where a lot of bad bacteria liked to hide out. Glad to hear that oyster can handle a litle fermentation. I think cubes would not be so forgiving--or maybe just not tough and aggressive enough.

I use the paint strainers to easily remove all the straw from the drum without a lift or slipping a disk. I tie them off with a slipknot with a tail so I just pull the tail till its at water level then grab the bag and lift it out then transfer to my draining table to cool. It also helps keep the portioned gypsum or manure in each bag at the correct ratio. I wear rubber dipped elbow length gloves when handling the hot bags.

LIke Gr0wer said, your pasteurization temps are fine. Anywhere between 140 and 160 IMO.
I wouldn't worry about the straw containing a few seeds, grasses, etc. All the straw I've ever used has had at least a small amount of these things. I've noticed no ill effects.

I operate on a smaller scale. But I can think of other uses for the strainer bags--good for making almond milk, among other things.

I use the strainer bags to line my spawn soaking buckets too. After the soak i pull the bag and place into my sink to drain. Then i put the drained seeds into the empty pail stretching the elastic over the lip and and scoop out of the bag into jars. Ive also used it for small scale pasteurization stovetop using a single bag.

^^ Yep, that's what I use for my 140 gal pasteurizer. I can fit 6 laundry bags with 9 lbs each dry straw in there. Each bag makes one column that weighs about 40 lbs when finished. Also, never had a problem with dirty/seedy straw, just pasteurize it properly and it's good to go.

I love you guys. I was actually looking at upgrading to burlap but that's too damn big for my back. And that's some rugged mesh I remember using them in basic training.
