I don't know what it is.
Would a doctor recommend it to me?

I work in healthcare, so I know that you shouldn't trust it. Doctors do recommend Reishi for a variety of treatments. It depends on how open they are to treatments outside of the pharmaceutical industry. They don't get kickbacks from Reishi!
This should explain most of your questions.

Yeah I could start to tell feeling more clear, more energy and just a slight increase in well being. Started to notice after a week or 2. Levels out around a month of daily tea. Usually about 4-6 grams dried reishi a day. I mix with cacao powder and honey/syrup. Great way to start my day instead of coffee or weed

I make tinctures(double extractions) of both reishi and chaga mushrooms and have been using them to treat my RA for almost 2 years now. I was able to stop taking the methotrexate, which was making me sick and very susceptible to infections...and literally have not been sick in almost 2 years.
I dose both several times a day...2-3 droppers full at a time.
I'm not sure about the mental acuity stuff, but they are awesome immune system regulators.

I love reishi. I actually grew some a while back, that was fun and awesome. The one thing I found really strange about it is: when I drink it, I honestly felt like I almost got a body high. Like very, very slight but a bit of a pleasant tingling AND, even more strange, I felt GIDDY! And my girlfriend did too! We both had kind of a little giggly, wanting to smile sort of happiness. Now, I was prepared to accept that this was just my excitement of getting to try some homegrown reishi and drinking it for the first time, but it happened on later times of drinking it. AND I just recently read on another site about natural, healthy supplements on a yoga type site, and the author described that she felt a giddy type of happiness after drinking it as well! That blew my mind and I find that really awesome.

Get that placebo effect excuse out of your head. It's not in the least bit scientific if you are self diagnosing.
Listening to your body and spirit will yield better results. Does it make you calmer, faster, stronger, self-aware?
Mushrooms have been known to aid in health since very ancient times. We have lost the Way, and have lost our connection to them.

I like that a lot. You're so right. I've experienced those effects repeatedly and still wasn't able to accept it as truth for some reason. Each time it happened I convinced myself it was due to my expectation of it happening again or whatever way we blow shit off. I actually found myself subconsciously trying to diminish the effects I felt and told myself its all in my head. The truth is in that tea! The truth is the bodily sensation I get after having some. It really is a feeling of rejuvenation, not only in my physical body but my entire being. Maybe it's not that way every time, or for every person, but without a doubt, it was obvious to me that my body was loving it.
By the way, for those that may not know reishi has been used in ancient Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years and the name they gave it is Lingzhi. This means supernatural mushroom, or spiritual/divine mushroom. Seriously. They weren't joking. I believe this mushroom is one of the more incredible things to exist on the planet and implore you to research more into the studies that have been done with it on ill patients. It's frightening that no one knows what the hell it is while commercials for pharmaceuticals with an endless list of side effects play on loop during the nightly news every night of the week. Sorry for the rambling, little stoned.
