if you got good colonization on cakes and have them under good humidity and temp etc., yet are getting only mini-shrooms, as in less than 1/2", what could be wrong? assuming PC, a thai variety from HE. did searches, could not find answer. thx for any wisdom.

85 DEGREES, dim light 6 hr. per day, air only when plexiglas lid is lifted once per day for a few minutes.

that's most likely our problem. fan those poor boys. you need to be checking them daily, and simply take off the lid, and even if you have to , use the lid as a giant fan and just fan them out real quick.
also, you say they're short, are they fat? if so, they might be water logged? what are they sitting on? directly on perlite? verm? anything?
need more details bro
as for the lighting, you may also not have enough? iono, when my fruiting is going on i have it on for 6 hours, off for 6 hours, on for 6, off for 6.
hope this helps, g'luck.

you have to fan that shit, not just remove the plexiglass, co2 sinks so it'll all be on the bottom not going anywhere when you remove the top, and a night light if enough yes

An aborted mushroom never develops past a "pin" shape, tho they can abort at somewhat large sizes. The caps never detach from the body in any way. If your mushrooms are opening up that means that they aren't aborts, they are tiny mushrooms. I'd say it's most likely due to a lack of air exchange. Try to fan them a time or two more per day. It could just as easily be a lack of humidity, so make sure that is right too.
Let us know if anything worked, good luck. Make sure to dunk and roll those cakes!

if you put polyfill in dime sized holes in the lids during fruiting, does this lessen or eliminate the need to remove the chamber lid and fan for air exchange? how tight do you need to pack the polyfill in the holes?

sounds like total lack of o2. you need to open that badboy up once, if not two times a day and fan it out. If you're using the tube in tube incubator, just take the top lid off, and heavily fan it out 5-10 times. Not heavy enough to knock over your babies, but enough to get a fresh set of o2.
are the pins dark in color, if not black already?
but then again, may be pre-birth?
you could be like "nah dawg, these are just the ones that start off, die then the big badass shrooms start growing in behind them".
if you tell yourself that you can maybe smile about this situation

no, because CO2 is heavier than O2 you would have to place the holes at the bottom just above the perlite, filtering it would be better done with tyvek because it allows a little more gas exchange and for optimum exchange you'd need a fan at the top pushing fresh air into the chamber and with any of these you'll increase the amount of misting that you do.
Easyest way, fan for a minute, mist and recover. do it any time you look at it, or at least 4 times per day.
