Why are we here? * 2
    #22402074 - 10/19/15 10:02 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Seriously, people. Why are we all here? Pardon, it's been a while since I logged in rather than browsing, and I lost my old login an email, but I feel like this has to be said.
Everywhere I look, I see mycologists bashing other mycologists over questions asked, over suggestions made... Over avatars, even. Let's just admit right now and get it out of the way, that we're all here because none of our real life friends have any fucking clue what we're talking about when it comes to fungi. No one shares our passion, and we're here to relate to people across the globe who share our passion.
I fully understand that many people don't use the search function when thy could, but maybe there's more to it than that. What if not everyone is a genius at entering the proper search terms and can't find what they're looking for? So instead of answering the question and being helpful, or even providing a link to said search results, we have to insult the person without knowing anything about them? At the very least, you'd think in a forum full of hippies, you could find just a little patience and understanding. Never mind compassion.
So then I have to ask, who is the enemy? Is it someone new to mycology who shares our passion but has trouble with their crops and/or navigating the site? New hobbyists are welcomed with malice, spite, and mean-spirited sarcasm at every turn. Is it really necessary to berate someone for not possessing the knowledge and experience many of us possess?
Should someone be insulted for using tap water instead of distilled, or Karo rather than malt extract? Wild Bird Seed rather than Brown Rice Flour? SGFC rather than Monotub? Why not guide them instead?
It will be news to many, but insulting someone doesn't make you a better anything. Rather, it makes you a worse human being. A pompous ass who preys on the weak and less experienced in an attempt to display some sort of malicious superiority.
Forum etiquette includes many things about discussing vendors, posting before searching, and so on. Many rules to protect the experienced. As an end result, the community maintains the experienced, or those desperate enough to ensure the berating in order to grow successfully. How many newcomers are driven away by rotten attitudes and harsh responses to innocent questions? Can we really not carry on with our day if someone asks a question that's been answered? That says more of our day than it does the inquirer. I propose an addition to forum etiquette preventing the needless verbal bashing of newcomers.
As of now, every question results in the same series of replies. Someone asks a question, another person tells them to use the search function. Then someone else provides half an answer. Someone argues with that answer, and then everyone starts telling stories about their own personal grows. Could this be why question get re-asked?

Bad infomation is the enemy. If you don't want to be corrected, don't post things that need correcting. Otherwise I see very little insults or flames at all here. Please provide some links.

Usually your thought process only happens to dumb noobs. I like the ones that have a grow to show with their first post. I didn't start that way tho and I'm here now. Biggest problem with this place is people bitching for no reason making a tldr post about nothing

Mostly I find people are here generally just because they're trying to show they know more than someone else. That's just the Internet though. This website is no different than your average Internet levels of awful.

You can search pretty much any major topic and observe flaming. Bad information might be the enemy, but it isn't as if the bad information is being replaced with good information. The "correcting" you're referring to is roughly telling people they're stupid because they can't decide which of the many mixed opinions is the best way to go. If I told someone I used Karo for my liquid, someone would undoubtedly tell me that Karo is garbage and that Sugar in the Raw is the way to go. It's as if everyone thinks they can control the growth and survival of a natural element without random chance coming into play, and in the middle of the "this works better" brawls, newcomers are left confused and without definite answers. Personally, I've known liquid to BRF spawn to 50/50 coir/verm Monotub to be the cheapest, easiest way to go, with great, timely results. Yet someone or other would say I'm wrong and that I should be using grains for all. People just want their crops to grow, and they're scared, and it's easy to lose sight of what being unsure was like, and it's even easier to play the jaded veteran. Redundant posts never killed anyone, or there'd be no surviving members of Facebook. And maybe it's up to us to provide conclusive answers the first time, but it is definitely up to us to not be fucking dicks about it.

I think mush cult and the shroomery overall is pretty good considering it's the internet

No one is being a dick about anything.  Many people have opinions.  They share them. Then based off of that persons success or lack thereof people may decide to go with their opinion or not. To have an opinion doesn't make you an asshole.

Sure there are a few facepalm moments. Most of them are in fun and well deserved.  Like the guy who wanted to grow on his own poo. Its deserving that we have a laugh at such nonsense.  If you can't handle that, perhaps the internet is not the place for you.

As for sugar based LCs, I dislike them. I have tried them all many times and formulated an opinion. I have my own preference when it comes to liquid media. I am entitled to my opinion,  entitled to express it, and everyone else is entitled to take it or leave it based on demonstrable results. You will also be hard pressed to find a topic where I express a dislike for something and not give a reason. You will also be out of luck finding a post where I tell someone there canopy is no good cause they inoculated their grains with karo LC.

I like to think that people have moved past the point where constant validation is not required to keep the intent behind every post from being misconstrued as "flaming".
