Looks a lot like mold in the second pic, unsure about the first one. The first one actually wouldn't worry me too much, unless it gets bigger quickly. That second one isn't what I'd call 'cobweb', but it definitely looks questionable. What's interesting is that the pins within the suspect areas look to be healthy. It could just be fluffy mycelium [hopefully], but I'm leaning toward mold. How long has it looked like that? Has it gotten that big within a day or two?

I have been eyeing the entire casing for a few days ever since I noticed those butterscotch looking areas. They don't seem to be spreading like a contam would.

The suspect cobweb areas has looked relatively the same for a day or so... no burst of fuzzy growth or anything.

Pisses me off! As you noticed, there are pins! Guess it wouldn't hurt to brush with some H202 and wait it out.

What do you suppose that tan coloration is caused by?

Thanks

I have the same doubts Suntzu has. There are some spots which look like being lightly affected by cobweb but there also other spots with fluffy mycelium.
I would increase air exchanges, light periods and maybe mist the casing with a weak (maybe 1:15 or 1:20) h2o2 solution to take care of the cobweb with minimum impact on the pins.

"What do you suppose that tan coloration is caused by?"

Just by watching at the pics, it could be dried mycelium or mycelium piss. I'm inclined to believe it's mycelium piss as the casing is working at it's fullest in terms of pin production. This might promote the excess of excretion.

H2o2 wont kill cobweb IME, it does beat it down for a day or two then it comes back. I even tried salt for it once with about the same results, it just came back till I cut it out. H2o2 might do better if you tried a higher concentration as I only had 3%.

I don't think it is cobweb, guys. By now I'd expect cobweb to have run all over this casing, right? I brushed some 3% on those spots last night and this is that same area just a few minutes ago:

I hope this casing makes it. 'Tis my first.

Thanks for the good vibes, Suntzu. I could use them about now. :smirk:

Light periods? Interesting.
I should read that FAQ.

Cobweb doesn't like light.
Anyway, do you have any doubt about this light periods issue ?

 Me doubt you? Not a chance!  :noway:

I believe you. I have no experience with contams (yes!) and want to keep it that way if you know what I mean. It struck me as interesting that light is another factor that can help fight off some contam.

Good stuff.

I appreciate that!

Didn't wanna sound condescending or anything.

As I read my post up there about not having experience with contams, I have to laugh as a freshly inoculated set of jars contammed on me a day after posting.

I swear to God the whole fucking world is against me.

It happens with almost everybody. Without experience, all that's left is trial and error. Patience and paying attention to details is the key to achieve success
