Casing Substrates?
    #22400177 - 10/18/15 08:43 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys.
I have a couple brf cakes that are going to be done soon and I am exploring the world of casing.
I currently have organic verm, organic SPHAGNUM moss, and brown rice flour on hand for any possible substrates. Could I make a good substrate out of those ingredients or do I have to buy some stuff. Also, am I supposed to flood my casing with water? Additionally, when do I spray the casings everyday as soon as I make it or as soon as I see mycelium colonization? And I don spray the casing directly right?
Thanks!

A casing is a non nutrient layer that goes on top of a colonized substrate.

A bulk substrate is a pasteurized substrate that you would mix your grain spawn into evenly to let colonize. Examples are coir, horse poo, straw etc

Brown rice flour is a grain and therefore unsuitable for bulk substrate or casing, it has to be sterile. Grain can only be added to grain in sterile conditions.

You can make a casing layer mix with peat and verm and some lime, but I wouldn't case the cakes unless they are mixed into a bulk substrate first.

Try  looking for coir bricks in a pet store. You could prep a bulk substrate of coir/verm/gypsum and bucket pasturize it. You would then mix in your crumbled cakes to let colonize.

Once fully colonized if you so desired you could add a casing layer, but this is optional.

:whathesaid:

You have to make your bulk substrate first before casing it

Spawn those cakes to a simple 50/50 coir/verm mix. You'll want to use a cheese grater to break up the cakes, as this will increase the amount of inoculation points in your sub leading to much faster colonization.
