Hi there
im new here, ive had a bit of xp with libs but looking at trying amanita muscaria
I found what i believe are amanita muscaria today but im looking for confirmation.
i found these specimins growing under a silver birch which ive read they like, the stem is kinda webbed and leaves some sort of webbing type residue on your fingers. they are large and i would say cap size is about 20cm.
forgot to add - found in uk!

im 99% certain these are amanita muscaria just need clarification
thanks in advance

If all specimens are red then yes, A. muscaria.

Trusted identifier. Someone who's very experienced at identifying mushroom species. They have like a little bar/badge on the left of their forum posts. Near where it says "content" for you, but lower down in that section

sweetpea said: Check for the concentric rings around the base. They're rather fragile and it's hard to tell from your pictures. Looking good, otherwise.
For the red muscarias, the concentric rings aren't necessary to look for - as long as you know A. parcivolvata. For the yellow ones the concentric rings are necessary to view for a solid ID. These all look like Amanita muscaria except for the ones with the red smooth cap, which are likely Amanita jacksonii.

Thanks for the confirmation I havent picked the ones you ID as Amanita jacksonii so ill monitor their growth and see how they turned out.
yes ive read that Amanita muscaria can lose the scales/warts when exposed to rain, its worth noting all of these specimens were found in the same small area but ill see how they turn out

sweetpea said: I was under the impression the scales easily came off, and often do. A smooth cap isn't a definite indicator it's something else, is it? Both A. Jacksonii and parcivolvata look quite different than A. Muscaria to me. Even if they're smooth capped, wouldn't concentric rings on the red ones still confirm they're A. Muscaria? Or am I mistaken?
A. parcivolvata lacks an annulus and has a yellowish powdery stem. Also the warts look a little different....and the cap has a striate margin.
A. jacksonii never has warts, and at the base of the stem the volva flares out, very different than A. muscaria. It is also more fragile and has a stem that is more yellow.

A photo of the base of the stem will clear this up real fast. Amanitas are fragile, so you need to take a knife and dig down a bit, and use the knife to pop the base of the stem out from below. If you just grab it and pull the base of the stem will stay underground and we'll be left guessing what it looks like.

I have found them by Pine, Doug Fir, and Sitka Spruce. They like to grow with Boletus Edulis too.
