King Oyster on lipa Pasteurized Fuel Pellets / brewers spent grain trials
    #22397270 - 10/18/15 11:53 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Giving fuel pellets a go for the first time and figured play it safe with lipa tek and 7% gypsum. First I made a test batch to find 1200g water per kg substrate is about perfect with only a few drips of water when squeezed, 1300g was too soaked and dripped excessively when squeezed.

Here is how it went down,

140g gypsum per bag
filled each bag to 2000g with 100% oak fuel pellets
placed bags on scale and added 2400g boiling water using kettle with valve and hi temp hose
Placed probe into one bag, read 176F to start
Placed six bags into cooler and allowed to sit overnight
Come morning the bags were still 105F so i removed from the cooler to speed up cooling
Spawned each bag with 1qt king oyster millet spawn
Plans are to cut the bag, case with verm

culture is from amp 244 storebought clone same as grown in this thread

I actually switched the substrate to XL grow bags. The large bags were too small for almost 10 lbs of sub + quart of spawn. I left the first bag in the L bag since i already went through the effort of mixing the spawn in, took about 5 times longer than the XL bags to thoroughly mix. I'll rinse out the L bags for sterilization use later. My shelves are all full with jars and pink oyster bags so these guys get the floor.

now we wait...

Nice going Gr0wer! I cant wait to see how this goes.

Did you notice how aggressive and fast that mycelium was? It just tore through my WBS jars.

Its some real dense fast growth, hopefully i have equally as good results indoors and out. I think ill give one bag to my friend to fruit outdoors, probably break it up into more pellets and bury it. Nighttime temps are forecast to be in the mid 50s starting next week so i think timing was perfect!

King oysters require cold temps in order to initiate fruiting?

They are a cooler weather oyster. Prior to a few weeks ago my chamber would be 70-80F which is a bit hot or so i've read. Im now down in the low 70s to high 60s in my garage. I actually have another strain of kings in route so i'm interested to see how these two do side by side.

Just prepped up another 7 lipa bags. Added 100g red wheat bran to three of the bags for 5% bran. I also decreased my temps from a 205 boil to 195 since last time i saw 176 substrate temp and now i'm at 171 start. I'm still on the fence on figuring out the logic of this is lipa tek. Should i attempt to lower the temp for a more typical pasteurization temps with supplements? Or leave it at a boil and shoot for more of a low temp fractional sterilization? Either way i really need to get some cinder blocks and expanded steel for my drum to sterilize some 15-20% bran bags in the next few weeks. Sq ft is at a premium at my place and these unsupplemented bags are for the birds.

I would use the boiling water if you're going to use supplements.

Opinion taken, keep to the tek is prolly best. Go for more of a fractional sterilization as there are really no beneficial bacteria in pellet fuels vs say manures or composts.  I spawned the bags today so we will see how it all turns out over the next week. Hopefully no contams. I spawned outdoors and it was raining so there should be minimal airborne spores and dust for the supplemented bags. The first 6 bags are about 25% colonized now, hopefully finish up this weekend and case early next week.

Looking good. Ill case with verm this weekend. These are the first bags with no bran. Ill have to PC my verm as it was packing material and not a clean bag.

total lipa bags
13 king oyster bags 3 with 5% bran
5 blue oyster multispore bags

190 lbs total!! I'm hoping for 2 lbs harvested per bag, especially with the bran bags if they don't contam.

now i need to buy more pellet fuel

Looks a little early to case those yet. I'd let em colonize a bit longer.

My kings always take an extra week or two longer then regular oysters before I start seeing pins.

handshake lol?

I've seen posts where people claim to get a lb off a bag half the size. These are XL bags with 2 kilos of DRY substrate 5 kilos total wet and spawned . I would only need to hit 50% BE and i have a large sum of my grow paid off....

On second though my straw bags which get 1 lb first flush and maybe another 1/2-3/4 2nd and third flush weigh in at 6-7 kilos wet.. so 2 lbs off 5 kilos of sawdust might be a stretch without bran. But that's pinks which are known for lower BE and these are king and blues.... Stay tuned.

I couldn't tell they were the XL bags.  but good luck!  2lbs would still be pretty impressive with little or no supplements.

So. 4/5 of the first batch are laden with green nasty. And these were unsupplemented bags. Id be willing to bet the bran ones will contam 100%. Looks like ill be converting my pasteurizer to a steamer real soon. Looks like the outdoor king path will be sooner than expected. The only thing i didn't do to TEK was i spawned at 1/2 the rate, that might have been the culprit. Also i'm not sure if kings were the best choice for this TEK. Looks like ill be prepping up jars tomorrow to reset with.

I've been using hardwood pellets from menards. 50 pound bag for four dollars. I didn't pasturize due to these being heat pressed. I added water then mixed in my pearl oyster spawn.  I've got my fist pins showing today. It was fully colonized in a week and a half.  Couldn't be happier with my first grow so far.

sounds like a luck batch lol. I wish i was seeing the same. So the other factor that may have been it was i transferred from the large to XL bag after the heat treatment. But spawn bags are typically really clean when new and i use them all the time for pasteurized straw with no issues. It could also be a brand thing, maybe some brands use cleaner wood than others?

Could be. I'm too new to this and still experimenting.  I didn't even have full access to posts until I made my  tenth tonight. Yeah I was shocked. I started another tonight to see if I could get the same results.  The jar I added was a full half gallon of Spawn that colonized crazy fast too.  I'll try to add a pic tomorrow if you are interested in having a look.

Noooooo!!!

I've always found it easier to supplement with spawn rather than bran and things of that nature. I just whip up a lot of spawn and mix it up at some obscene ratio, that'll get that N% way up there, and also cut down the spawn run, which also minimizes the risk of contamination.

Plus I've always sterilized my sub, but my grows are not as vast as yours. Sterilizing 6 large bags would require three large pressure cookers, and pasteurizing doesn't require such "clean" procedures, so I see why its admirable. Lets hope that 5th bag stays clean!

I used rolling boil water for this batch, the second batch i dropped it a few degrees. I was talking with the wife, i think ill just be getting an AA941 and flow hood once i see some returns from the big grow room. Then after that ill rebuild my small grow chamber and use that for kings and  other low FAE high humidity woodlovers. I'm just going to focus on blues now and let my other cultures sit for a few weeks in jars, maybe even refrigerate. If any of these bags do colonize ill put them into my marta with minimal fancy climate controls. And i still have 4 more bags that are unsupplemented and so far not infected fingers crossed on them. I should have used lime too.... maybe that would have given me a fighting chance.

The block I was talking about last night.  Unpasteurized, hydrated(boiled water then soaked for 10 minutes) fuel pellets. I spawned it in a large grow bag with about 1 quart of hard white wheat and 1 quart of whole oats from a half gallon jar and an extra quart of the same mixture.  I threw in a couple tablespoons of used Folgers grounds and the same of gypsum in the spawn jars mixture for good luck.  In the bag, it was definitely a heavy spawn to wood ratio like amp mentioned, but I would not guess over half.  I mashed it up good and it was fully colonized in less than a week.  Its been in the Fruiting chamber a week.

I feel I got pretty lucky with my first batch of mushrooms ever lol.  I had them at 80 degrees +/- 3 degrees.  In my incubation room under the stairs, there is a furnace/ a/c  duct that passes through but doesn't vent and that  messes with the temp a slight bit.  I've filled the room with about 10 gallon jugs of water to help regulate the temp fluctuations.  Getting more jars and bags in there will help with that too.

They are a bit gnarly looking!  The humidity is at 95+ in my greenhouse and I've got a fogger and an air stone in a self watering dog bowl for FAE and humidity.  It would run for two weeks without refilling if I needed it too.  The fogger runs for 15 minutes every hour with three two hour breaks throughout the day.  The air stone runs 24/7.

I don't mean to hijack this thread that I didn't start. I just am having incredible luck with my first batch and am excited about it!

What did you do with the contaminated bags? Hopefully you just put them outside somewhere. I've had a lot of good harvest from contaminated bags I just threw it outside.

Is it necessary to cut the bags? I seem to recall reading that if if you keep the temps low >200F the bags will last 5-6 times?

Cased with coir/verm, should have made more as i barely covered the substrate. Ill let them colonize some of the casing for a few days until i have room in my martha to fruit.

I don't intend on profiting from its distribution. The property is Paul Stamets' and not my own.

Just type "Growing gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms PDF" into google and multiple sources offer the entire book in PDF form absolutely free.

The last page he talks about slicing the bags 3-4" above substrate level to create the perfect microclimate for fruiting.

you don't have to case if you can keep the humidity fogged.  better yet to let the bags 'ripen' a few weeks, cold shock, and let them pin in the bag.  then cut the tops off the bags if you're going for a trumpet shape.

Thanks for the pointers drake. Glad i didn't cut the bags open yet.  I'll place them outside later this week, the nights have been down in the 50s lately. I should be able to fog my grow chamber, especially once i get the pinks out of there and into my grow room.

Casing is 1/2 colonized. One bag has two spots where the myc is popping through the casing. I just have paperclips on the folded over ends so hopefully the FAE, cold shock tonight, and lighting will induce some invitro pins. All the bags are solid white now.

I've just started trying kings, that's why so many questions. I love all the info I get from this site. I have some pinning now, but I didn't really know what I did. They took forever to start pinning and I had them in the garage. I know the temperature here has fluctuated wildly lately.

i dunno.  if you can keep them around 60 that's ideal.  around 50 and they take forever to grow.  closer to 70 and they'll grow hollow stems.  not to mention you'll have flies and bacteria to deal with.

I have the 5 king bags sitting outside tonight for a cold shock. I also mixed up 3 more bags with lime and just warm water. I also used 2 quarts spawn vs 1. I made a solution of 60g lime in 4 gal 100F water. Bags are made as follows,

1800g pellets
  200g wheat bran ~10%
  100g gypsum ~5%
2200g 100F lime water
2 quart jars of milo spawn king oyster storebought clone

I stole the lime water solution idea from aleon, makes for a much better distribution of lime. If i have high contams ill add the heat back in and do a heat and lime pasteurization. If all else fails i can fall back on my AA941.

Just be aware that the max ph of lime water drops with increased temps.

Also saturation of hydrated lime in water is around 1.5gr/L any more just precipitates out.

That's odd because most chemicals are soluble at a higher rates with temperature increase not inverse. I do know PH will drop with temperature increase though, but it will raise back up with temperature drop.

it's a weak base so it probably has more to do with thermodynamics than strictly chemistry.  there is a significant difference (a pH point or 2) when you're talking about 70F water vs 50F well water.

You guys think maitake would do well with kings in the same chamber? Or should i place the maitake on shelving in my grow room with the oysters? I prepped up 12 jars of the aloha AZ strain and im trying to decide which chamber to go into.

pins!! Ill cut the bag tops in a few days once the pins are more established.

the warm water lime bags are looking horrible. They look 90% colonized with tons of small green spots. I will wait and see how it turns out but its not looking so good. Ill try one last lipa tek combined with lime water before moving onto steam fractional or pressure cooker sterilization. I figure i can just use my 2nd bathroom as a still air room until i get my flow hood for inoculation, i've done it before for G2G's with no contams.

PINS!!!:mjdance::omgawesome:

I've never had success pasteurizing wood substrates. I've never had any problem sterilizing them. If you are trying to boom on a budget, look into getting a shmuv box for inoculation. Its the exact same principle as a flow hood (minus the laminar flow) and can be had for $40 or so. All you do is take a True HEPA desktop air purifier and tape a large clear trashbag to it so you have an inflated trash bag with filtered air. You cut arm holes and an eye hole and do all your work inside the bag. I got lucky and found my desktop purifier at goodwill for $5. The filters were $30 at Walmart. I do all my sterile work in it. Petris, G2G, Slurries, and large bag inoculation. Works like a charm.

I have a glove box, just not large enough for 6 10 lb bags, impulse sealer and spawn jars. I actually just ordered a desktop HEPA to help make my bathroom a clean(er) room. I'll wear my HEPA respirator and do the whole fresh out of the shower with clean or no clothes method. I'm in the middle of a brew day but as soon as i finish ill move onto mushrooms, ill pressure cook 6 bags in my AA941 for 5 jars of shiitake 3782 and one jar of store bought king clone i set aside because the jar was left open, but it colonized fine.

So i was just looking at my pile of spent brew grains and i figured why not. I've grown blues off it in jars so why wouldn't kings. So i tossed 2500g drained spent brewers grain 500 g dry pellets (to absorb excess moisture) and a 100g gypsum into 5 bags then made one control bag with pellets and 10% bran. Loaded up my PC and we shall see!! The bags were the used bag from the first post so there isn't much but time invested into this one. PC at 15 psi for 2:30 and ill move it to my cleaned bathroom for cooling.

Total loss on the 3 warm water lime pasteurized bags. Black mold all over em. I'll be giving my king jars a few more days to better colonize then make some boiling water & lime lipa bags later this week. With lipa tek i was getting 10-20% contams, hopefully lime will bump that down to maybe 5-10% which is much more acceptable to me. The next set of XL bags will be 20% less substrate. I realized my martha doesn't have much headroom for fruits with the bags so full. I have the brewers grain and control bag cooling on the counter in my spare bathroom, i'll put one quart of spawn per bag this evening.

Why are you messing around with that silly lipa tek instead of just properly pasteurizing your subs.? :oldman:

Boiling water is well beyond target temperature.

Because fuel pellets don't take as well to pasteurizing like straw does, lipa tek seems to be almost fractional sterilization coupled with clean substrate. I realize boiling water is beyond the temp but it's the tek and it works even with bran supplements.  I have 10 jars of the same king culture i can do a comparison with. 5 bags using boiling water and 5 using 173F water which should yield a 145 substrate start temp.

Agreed. I have good success with the tek. I have tried it using lower temperatures and it was a disaster. Green everywhere.

millions of pins but most aborted. I cut the bags 4-5" above the casing and pulled the sensor out of my chamber forcing my foggers on 100% duty cycle. It seems one fogger is keeping it with a nice layer of mist, two was soaking the chamber. Im using tiny 2" computer fans on both the intake and exhaust and i deleted the swamp cooler unit, considering making a heating chamber before the fogger bucket using a 150W light bulb style infrared heater in an old ammo box. I plan to drop the garage to 50-60 but want this chamber around 55-65 for kings, shiitake and maitake.

Wow! Nice pinset! As far as the aborts go, I'm wondering if they are getting too wet. I have noticed that when pins of oyster (not sure of other kinds) mushrooms are small, they don't like being too wet. After they get a little bigger, they seem to handle misting better.

I had them in the sealed bag so it could have been too high RH and not enough FAE? I don't mind getting 3-4 monsters per bag anyways.

I suppose that's possible. I'm still learning myself. Yeah, the only one I had grow on the contaminated straw bag I had, was like 4.25 oz or so. And that's a baby compared to allot I have seen here.

Made another 12 lipa bags. I now use water with 40-50g lime and a 1/2 pint of wood ash that's at a rolling boil. Ive also been using 2 quarts of spawn per bag. Im also now cooling and spawning the bags in my spare "clean room" bathroom with a desktop HEPA. This should give me a good scale on contams from the wood prep and not environmental. The first few batches i was spawning outside. Eventually i will be doing these in front of my flow hood once it's built. I'm continuing with the king oysters which seem to love it and also have 2 bags each of aloha AZ maitake and TS-1 Shiitake.

The spent brewers grain sterilized bags are colonizing super fast! All the leftover sugars i'm sure are speeding up growth. They should be 100% in about a week. Some are spotty so i had to mix the bags again. I think i didn't let the bags cool enough and that killed some of the spawn. I lost one bag to contam out of the 6 sterilized bags but the impulse seal at the top was bad.

HEPA is a holmes pn# HAP242-NUC with a 99.99 .3 micron filter PN# HAPF300AP-U4 $50 total. This current set of lipa bags is 9% bran and will be a new king culture i recently got.

3/5 bags are still fruiting. Kings are slow especially at 63-66F so they are still tiny. The other two had pins and all aborted. I'll cold shock the two bags again this week.

None of our clients are interested in regular oysters. They sell in the supermarkets at 6 euros/kg. Our restaurants pay 15 euros/kg for the kings and our shops and wholesalers pay 10/kg (the supermarkets are selling at 19E/kg!)

$10/lb is what restaurants typically pay.  at the wholesale level it's about $5-6/lb

be glad you aren't in europe. eryngii can be had for $3/kg at wholesale pricing.  the fucking koreans are slick.  shiitakes are $6/kilo or less

i heard from a farmer that there was a farm sending 8 tons of white buttons to be fed to pigs :O

Europe is a big place! Eryngii is very rare in France outside the biggest cities. Also French people are deeply suspicious of anything that doesn't come from France so the Korean producers don't even get a look in here.

I replaced the sensor on my digital controller since it was corroded from the high RH. This time i put some silicone around the connection so it wont happen again. After calibration i got the unit holding the chamber at 96-98 RH. Seems to be working well. I have one ultrasonic on 24/7 and two on the controller. This prevents sandwiching of dry air if i didn't have the one on 24/7.

I'm using a WH8040.

I also have my analog gauge in there to verify everything is working and calibrated as displayed on the digital readout.

I have 41 jars to inoculate tonight. Ill do a handful of kings and more maitake, the last two bags i made contamed while the kings are already done colonizing with no losses, most likely due to the slower growth. The brewers grain sterilized bags are 90-100% so hopefully in 1-2 weeks ill cold shock and move them into fruiting. If all my bags colonize with no contams i'll be at 1/2 capacity on my fruiting chamber so i need about 18 more bags to make. The Shiitakes will probably follow these once they're flushed out.

Does anyone with king growing experience have any notes on my fruit body shape? does it look normal are there any telltale signs of too low or high FAE or RH? Also can i directly mist kings like i would blues or pinks?

So i ended up making a 4-10 jars of each of SRA, maitake aloha AZ, l. sulphureus, shiitake 3782, and nameko. Should get interesting soon

Is it just me or are these real close to harvest and looking awfully small? no supplements on this bag but still i would expect more. Im guessing its because i wasn't misting and i now realize my sensor and gauge were out of calibration so RH was actually like 90% vs 96-97%. I just calibrated and set the humidistat to 98. Hopefully the remaining pins will do much better with everything dialed in.

Yes, looking pretty small.. lots of failed pins, perhaps because of your RH problems?

most likely. The odd shape of the front fruit tells me the RH was funky. Hopefully once i pack this chamber and keep up with misting The RH will maintain itself better.

The spent brewers grains bags are looking real good. Should be ready to shock and fruit real soon!

So the most recent batch of 6 bags i lost 2/6 to cobweb and green mold. Next batch will get lime in the bags. Another batch of 6 will get wood ash. If i can't get this down below 10% contams i'll move on to steam fractional.

The straw logs are starting to pin. Nothing to impressive on my bags, mostly 3-5oz fruits 1-2 at a time. Hopefully my other strain of king oysters will make larger and more abundant fruits also the lack or low degree of supplementation at 5% in these bags isn't helping. On top shelf is my brewers grain trial, turns out the water content is still really high, once i cut the bags i'll drain excess. Next time ill put more dry fuel pellets in to dry them out more. I did 2500g wet grain 500g dry pellets, next time ill do 2000/1000 to soak up more water.

I've been following this thread with great interest as i am experimenting with kings as well. I have about 8 bags of supplemented fir sawdust colonizing and the myc is going through it fast. I also have 2 bags with fir sawdust/straw/shredded cardboard looking good so far. I dont have a fruiting chamber yet so ill be fruiting them in my unheated and unfinished damp sunroom which is currently around 52 degrees and 85% RH. I am going to try several different methods of fruiting them including in the bag cased with peat, cased with verm, cased with sand, as well as burying some blocks in tubs of casing. Some very good info on this thread.  I will also experiment with temps because as drake and others mentioned they are very slow at the lower temps.

Grower, Since i have that same controller which i havnt implemented yet i would be really appreciate if you could post a pic of the fix you did to improve the sensor install so i can avoid burning mine out when i finally get a fruiting chamber built.

Just seal up the back side and connection over the plug with silicone sealant. RTV or bath caulking should work. Place the unit nearby your humidifier for faster readings. Also place it inside a tube to prevent it from getting sprayed or dripped on.

I would skip the sand, nobody wants grit in there mushrooms if you do miss a spot of casing stuck to the fruit. Also sand doesn't have good water retention which is the main purpose of a casing layer. 52 should be a good temp, slow growth but should make nice fruits. Mid to high 60s gave me hollow stems on the first harvest. If your getting some sun in that sunroom i think a cool idea would be bury a block in a pot of peat based potting soil and plant some plants in there. The plants should provide a little microclimate with higher o2 and humidity for the mushies.

Awesome, bookmarked this. Good point about the sand, yea i hate grit! It was my inherent cheapness thinking there. Yep it is all windows in there and some skylights. Its a project i started and havnt finished yet. No flooring etc. Interesting you mentioned the plants as i have about 20 aloe plants and other assorted plants sitting on a scaffold in there and is probably why the room is so damp causing the windows to drip. Thats why i figured... until i get my fruiting chamber in the basement built this is a perfect spot to try some shrooms. That scaffold would actually make a good grow rack if i covered it with plastic. I actually did what you said as a test and buried a small piece of leftover totem log from my outdoor grow in one of my garbage can plant pots that was full of peat/soil mix and already have some nice looking oysters popping up. The meter right at the soil is showing 90%RH and 52F right now so i think this will work out well for my first test grow. I was thinking of building some boxes out of 2x8s or 2x10s to bury some blocks in and have right in front of the windows. Would you know is pressure treated wood ok for mushrooms? I am thinking maybe not.

yea no go on CCA wood for growing plants or mushrooms. Cheapest option is build a pallet planter box for nearly free and just replace it in a few years when it rots out. Some pallets are made of oak if you look around.

thats what i thought...nix the pressure treated,  pallet planter huh, i like it, as a bit of a pack rat i happen to have a big stack of pallets at the back of my property. Most of them are fir, but i have some oak ones as well. I think both of those are fairly rot proof. I was planning on using a bunch of them for setting up logs on in the spring but this is another good use for them, thanks again you just saved me some money buying boards. Im also looking around for some shallow black plastic tubs to bury some blocks in. I am thinking for my grow boxes ill put a layer of coarse limestone gravel on the bottom, then the fully colonized blocks, then a layer of casing probably peat mixed with something either lime or gypsum or verm and probably throw in a scoop of zeolite in one test bed to see if it makes a difference as this stuff has a big effect on my plants health. I like the idea of the plant microclimate you mentioned since i have tons of plants. I realize this is far from any sterile production environment but hopefully will provide me with some mushrooms to eat and test out options i could possibly use in a future greenhouse environment. I am going to have to put some heaters in there soon though because the temps dropping here in canada and soon the room will be well below 50 and also need to hang some floros as we are already down to 8.5 hours of daylight.

i tried a new mix of sub recently, 18 cups fir sawdust, 2 cups maple sawdust from my planer, 2 cups bran, 1 cup gypsum, about 4 cups straw, and about 10 cups shredded beer cases (corona). PC for 2 hours. The kings seem to like this better than anything ive tried yet. I usually burn my beer cases outside so i figured even better if i can grow stuff off them... will see how it turns out

I found some nice black bins at wallyworld, they look good for about 2 blocks. 5 bucks each canadian.

just an update on my latest cardboard experiment. Even though those bags are colonizing like crazy i just noticed a some green spots on some carboard chunks sitting on the top of the bag even though the bag is almost fully colonized. I am now rethinking using carboard or changing my procedure. I decided to try this because some other trusted cultivators mentioned using cardboard and im all about recycling the tons of cardboard i have around here. Since the contam piece is a bigger 1" x 1" piece of carboard i think this might be the reason and shredding the cardboard more finely might have avoided these contams. I know its a gamble but instead of chucking the bag i soaked it down with IPA, put in my SAB and carefully removed the offending piece of cardboard. Im also thinking a longer PC cycle when using cardboard might be in order, something like 2.5 hours, but ill definitetly make sure it is finer shredded next time.  Live and learn.

Brewers grains are blowing the control bag away. I just realized they were pinning and all the bags together had about 1/2 lb of pins growing up the walls so i tore them off and cooked em up!!

 fuel pellets and 20% bran control bag

Original Lipa bags with 0-5% bran. It seems supplementation is king with kings, hopefully my 10% lipa bags do better.

Brewers grain i already pulled about 2-3 lbs off three bags for saturdays market. I didn't have time to weigh them but they're growing great! Seems to be a short and stubby strain. I just did a scratch on the original lipa bags as well as cut some holes down at the bottom to hopefully get another flush. I used my scalpel to scratch.

Yea, i read about enyngiis needing higher CO2 for big caps. This is why i am not introducing any oxygen into my fruiting location except for the plants in the room. El ninyo has been wreaking havoc with my fruiting location as these are the hottest temps ive ever seen in Canada for december, the room s now getting up to 75 during the day which is not good. The humidity is dropping as well with the temp increase so ive decided to introduce some environmental controls in the way of humidity with a fogger i just whipped up. This is the first time ive grown enyngii and i am pretty happy with the results so far. This is 1 qt grain spawn cased in a freezer tray. I have 2 big tubs going with sawdust blocks cased for the next test. Should be better. Hopefully it will get colder outside as i dont have a permanent fruiting room built yet.

Also, a lot of growers pick off the smaller pins before they really get going to allocate more resources to the larger pins that remain.

If you are trying to hit the market have you looked into a bottle tek? These guys have it down pretty good:

So i got a little over a pound off each bag of brewers grain, seems like a success to me ~25% harvest with no casing. Still waiting on the second flush. Later this month ill make 21 jars of king and  try fractional sterilizing brewers grain mixed with wood bags in my 55 gal drum. Only thing is i'm out of bags and xmas is near. Ill probably need to wait to buy the bags as i plan to buy 1000 bags from unicorn bags, unless sales are good this weekend

Im currently trying another lipa experiment. I'm made 3 Xl lipa bags with 20% bran and .5% lime and another 3 with 1% wood ash. Same split test with 8 shiitake bags.

Hey Grower, did you mention somewhere how much brewers grain you put in? Got a brewer in the next valley, might be paying him a visit one of these days. :goat:

I'm doing tests with woodash for oysters as well, not very successful for the moment :facepalm3:

My wood ash and lime experiments also went horribly wrong. I don't know how some people claim no contamination, i just made those 6 lime and ash bags. Looks like all but one is contaminated. I also upped my supplementation to 20% which didn't help. Could have been a spawn issue thou as my shiitake bags are looking good. Im going to give the lipa tek a rest and move onto steaming, just need to rig up a swamp cooler float valve to feed my pasteurizer pail for steam conversion. Ill just run the 1500w element at 100% for 8 or so hours of 205F core temp. Need to get my flow hood up too.

what's % wood ash you used? I'm  also more and more convinced that the only real efficient solution for my oysters is steam! Still wrestling with temps though. Four out of 10 batches are over-sterilized. The ones that come through fine are yielding ok. Looking for a way to get the steam temp down. Is that where you are using that swamp cooler for? Thought of putting in a ventilator to force steam into the steambox.
Here's my experimental set up. Wood fired boiler RR-style working great for steaming shiitake bags but too hot for oysters. Thinking of welding a bigger steambox with a fan.

I'm sorry, reread your post. We're not talking about the same thing. You're planning to sterilize the kings, I'm still wrestling with pasteurization and steam. I'll work it out, keep you all posted

I'm just going to steam sterilize. Why are you stuck on pasteurizing wood bags? Kings really like high supplements which require sterilization. The difference between my lips bags and brewers grain bags is night and day. I maybe got a half lb off each 4 kilo lipa block but got about a pound off each 2 kilo brewers block. And colonization was crazy fast on brewers grain when compared to 20% bran on pellets. Most likely due to the sugars in the brewers grain.

55 gal drum with a large cinderblock at the bottom then a wooden rack sitting on top of that holding the bags above of the water. I have a 1500W heating element ill run at 100% with no controls. I'm going to rig up a 5 gal pail next to the drum with a swamp cooler float valve and hose connecting the two that constantly feeds the drum as water steams off. I just found 16 large grow bags in my shed. Ill make 21 king jars tomorrow and use them for the grow bags. Ill have to pick up one or two pails of brewers grain from the brewery in a week or two once the jars colonize, or brew myself

Sounds like a good idea. Currently mulling over options for an electric steamer. Dont want to use propane.

Remember the liquid from brewing is toxic

5% Bran harvest 1 lb 2 oz each bag first flush no casing. The 10% has 100x more pins but only 2-3 large fruits.

Nice grower! What kind of temps are you running? Because of the cold snap here my room has dropped to the high 40s recently, i got the temps back up to the low 50s yesterday with a heater and my cased blocks have seen no pins so far, i think ive got it too cold.... or i put too much casing in and its spending its time colonizing the casing. Do you know the minimum temp for king fruiting?

I've been running my heater at 58F in my garage. This keeps my kings around 58-60 and the walk in around 55 since it has the swamp cooler and a lot of air gets pulled from outside on that chamber. With the king's anything around 65 or higher and you get hollow stems. I haven't really pushed the lower limits of fruiting these so hopefully someone else can give a better answer on that. I'd say 50-60 are about optimal. Did you already cut the bags open? If no just move them inside to warm them back up then put them back out to cold shock again. I typically don't cut the bags open till the pins are well established.

they are out of the bags, i buried them in these tubs with casing.

I just checked em and i have a couple of pins finally, should see some good action soon, i cranked up the temp to 59 cuz im sure the super cold was slowing them down. Im sure the casing slows them down too. Going to hook up some intake air as well next week, just got my new IF6 fan in the mail.

Nice, kings don't need that much FAE. i was manually fanning 3-4 times a day for a few days when my fan broke and it made some nice fruits. I run two 50 x 15mm 5V squirrel cage fans on my chamber currently, although i should have went with a slightly larger fan to better scale with my foggers. These are such low volume one fogger on will oversaturate the chamber fast so i run two.

yea, i know they are CO2 lovers. My last batch did fine with zero intake air but i have 25 big aloe plants in the room which im sure provide lots of O2. The intake will be mostly for my oysters. I just ordered a 5 disc fogger from mainlandmart, the shipping was a ripoff, 56 bucks to canada. I am really not too keen on buying these because i hear they burn out but figured ill try it out and see.

Im a bigger fan of multiple single disk foggers. I can get them for $10 total shipped each. If one burns out, replace it! Make sure you tighten the lock rings before firing any fogger, and check there tight from time to time when cleaning your water out.

wow i didnt know they were adjustable... great tip. That's also a good point about single disc foggers. I have one running now and it works great, puts out lots of fog for one disc. Ill keep this in for when this one burns out. How about the power source for 5 foggers?
