I hate how when I hunt I can't shake this worry some feeling of being seen. I'd like to say I'm not worried about being caught but maybe that's it. I've gotten smarter. I never hunt with more than one person and usually alone. Respect the area and its people. Photograph the patch so I don't look like a "druggie"and because there beautiful . What are your guys methods or thoughts. Heading to the oregeon coast heard its sketch , is it really that bad? I'm not asking edicates I respect the fungi and let the pins be:D

Just tell people you are a forager that is what you are if you look like a hippy they will just think of course. You don't have to say anything about active plants and if they ask teach them something.

The vest is a great idea! I am so sketched out about going on hunts because I am a woman and I don't have a hunting partner. I don't look like "the type" that does mushrooms (I've been told many times, whatever that means) so I have that working for me but I am more worried about someone seeing me wandering around on my own and seeing a target. Especially in the tacoma/seattle area. Gotta get a rape whistle. ..

Rape whistle would be useful, also self defence classes if you have the spare time/money to invest in them.
Also, if you have any friends with big or scary looking dogs, you could offer to walk the dog? Would be good cover and self defense

Also a great idea, if I started now then next season I'll be prepared to kick some ass! I only know people who have those terrible ankle biter "dogs" that I can't stand. I'm more of a cat person myself but they are terrible mushroom hunting allies haha.
I have only been hassled once while picking mushrooms but they were only edibles so it was an easy situation to handle.

Yeah that should sync up nicely. Shame about the dog thing, I have to borrow a fat pug when I go hunting or I'd probably get hassled. Maybe I should train my cat to sniff them out
What's the story on the edibles?

Just some oysters that I found. Someone was walking along the trail and I came out of the bushes with my bag of mushrooms and he asked why I was back there. I showed them what I had and said I planned on eating them with my pork chops that night.
They we delicious too btw.

Bit nosey of them, you think they were an undercover cop or something? I've only had weird looks before but nobody's said or done anything. The one exception was last week when I got chased by a load of young bulls out of a field, should've known by the lack of udders. Oops lol.
Another decent tip I heard if you like to hunt on grasslands is carry a golf club and say you're looking for a golfball that you lost. Hard to prove otherwise.

I don't think he was a cop. If he was, then he was probably retired. That's another good one, pretty funny. I have read on here about ppl pretending to be students but that can mean needing to know some names, and it's best not to have an excuse that leads to backup questions imo. I would rather just go where there are no people at all to hunt actives. That narrows down the options though... dilemmas.

. The funny thing is that in a livestock field near where i live that has a public footpath running through, there is actually the odd golf ball lying around for some reason lol.

Protip: Act like you belong there and people will leave you alone. If you find hallucinogenic mushrooms, mentally mark the place and come back when you can be more inconspicuous. That way if you do get stopped, you have nothing illegal to hide. Most people won't bother you at all, and if they do, just tell them to piss off or say you are working on something. Carry papers with you that have plants on them or something. Knowing the law helps as well. If you have multiple species of mushrooms and you get stopped and there just happen to be some trippy ones in your bag you can claim that you thought they were an edible species and have to take them home to get them identified. That's legit because if you can't tell species by sight, smell and habitat, you need them id'd anyways.

Also, know the names of a lot of edible mushrooms, which you should anyways. That way if you get stopped you can give a bunch of names of species to the cop and because cops are generally dumb as fuck, they will just tip their hats to you and tell you to carry on. Btw most actual police officers and sheriffs will leave you alone. DNR, Fish and Game, Park Rangers and the Forestry Service are who you have to worry about. If you look like you're hiking, they will leave you alone or just say hello. Don't act or look suspicious and people won't think you are suspicious.

Yeah this is pretty decent advice as well, especially if you go after stuff that isn't lib cap. Dunno if it would work in England but worth a try
