Ask yourself the question where would they find the material to block off so much light of there sun? Just look at our solar system and see how tiny our planets are in comparison with our sun. Why would they want to do it in the first place? Solar panels, lol?
It's most likely remains or leftovers from an interstellar collision between space objects. Planets colliding, comets, dust,...

It's all a simulation anyway all they saw was a glitch in the system, probably one of the system operators spilled some pop on a keyboard and it made a flash in the sky inside the simulation where we are. Yes that.

you wouldn't be able to notice a glitch in the system because whenever one occurred the simulation would recognise it and rerun the program from a point in time before the glitch occurred

Oh man, you're totally right..
Unless! The glitch was in the rerun protocol.....

Maybe they are millions of years more evolved than we are and can do that kind of stuff with ease. Imagine if we managed to colonize space and our Science evolved for thousands of more years. The possibilities are endless. I bet our galaxy is home to countless forms of highly evolved lifeforms, some which are so advanced in ways that we can't even fathom.

Interesting article. I've read a few about this now and I'm going to download their paper to read. Other user's have brought up a good point. Where would the get enough material to build structures capable of blocking out star light? Well, suppose there is/was a civilization there for billions of years. I mean, if humans manage to survive for billions of years, we will eventually colonize the solar system, mine other planets etc. Over billions of years of this, satellites would agregate and collect. Likely billions of them. I mean, there are already thousands of man made satellites orbiting earth from the past 50 odd years. Over millennia that would really add up since we just leave obsolete satellites in orbit. Also, notice that these signals are ~1400 years old.
I could imagine that mining the shit out of other planets, processing the ore and manufacturing the technology would require exorbitant amounts of energy. What better source for that energy than the star that they are orbiting?
I know it's a long shot, but hey, I'm a dreamer. I often wonder if other civilizations would evolve similar to humans. Would they invent something similar to the internet? Would they be as destructive as humans? How would there sciences be organized? etc.

i don't even think it would take that much matter to do something like this, when you consider technologies like carbon nanotubes and whatnot, you could create vast structures of surprisingly little mass

Keep in mind, its not blocking the entire star. Only 20% of it so, about the size of a even larger Jupiter.
I believe they harvested material from other planets, maybe entire planets or used the star's limitless energy to create matter to build around the star. Or both.
