CITES Fucking SUCKS

Well I placed an order yesterday for some awesome seeds that I've been wanting to work with for the past couple of years and I got an email today with answers to a question I asked about why some of the seeds said only shipped to EU.
Turns out some of the most awesome seeds I ordered can't be shipped to me due to CITES
Some of the seeds were Aztekium, Ariocarpus, Strombocactus, Stenocactus, Turbinicarpus and Thelocactus
I'm trying to cancel the order but I don't know if they'll let me.
DAMN!!! This Really Fucking Sucks

There are lots of sellers in the EU that ship overseas regardless of CITES however if customs opened the order it would be taken without a doubt.
CITES is useful to some extent to protecting plants in the natural environment. Imagine if people could just wipe out entire populations to sell it worldwide.
I'm certain however that there are local sources for those seeds although perhaps not at the price you want to get them. I always think it is best to order domestically if the seeds are available unless it is some ridiculous price.

Yes, spaceman, it is pointless. How on earth does it harm any of those cactus species in their natural habitat, if a nursery sends seeds of that species from the EU to the US?? In fact the aim of the exercise is to increase the number of individual plants of those species !!

On one hand CITES can protect Living populations for sure, however. .. It can also put a coffin nail in some species.
It is ridiculous and pointless. If the General public cannot propagate the species, how will it survive? On a shelf in a university greenhouse? Its just,(derp) if you ask me. It takes people who Care. I mean more than just Botanists in UNIV. We obviously care about Cacti. Some people could care less about cacti. . but we do.
I believe in a concept known as (Plant Amnesty). My home is a plant Sanctuary. I champion this cause. In the 1980's, in the USA, the Reagan administration created a (war on drugs), they declared war, on: Cannabis, coca-pants, and Lophophra. Its time for the war to end. As we are seeing now, wild populations of Lophophra are vanishing. Are they being replanted? They are endangered after all. The right thing to do, would be collecting seed, propagation, and reintroduction.
In Oregon, there was an event known as the Tillamook Burn. The wildfires devastated hundreds of acres of land, of old growth timber. Mainly Douglas Fir. My mother helped replant some of the trees, during that era. Today I can collect chanterelles under the trees she planted as a child. People should be allowed to grow, and (reintroduce) cacti to their natural and native environments. I know some of us here would probably even be willing to help grow and or offer seed in an effort to re-plant. I know the various (tribes) who use the sacred cacti, would also enjoy being able to re-plant. If we re-forest.. We can Re-cactus.
Its sad to see the war on drugs end up with plant genocide. It needs to end. Seriously! Plants are not the problem. People, are the problem. The plants themselves simply exist. Its US, who use them.
Its like.. do you blame a bottle of alcohol, or the person who drinks it? Do you blame a Weapon (of any kind), or the person who wields it as such?
Anyone else for Plant Amnesty?

look up a local cactus growers club. clubs like that sometimes sell seeds donated by members, usually very cheap.

The logic is that having any of them in circulation makes it easy to hide illegally sourced ones within legal shipments. I believe Gibson got their hands slapped for this reason.
The real mindfuck is that to protect the Asian sun bear you have to leave the gall bladder of North American black bears in the gut pile. They are so plentiful you can get a tag for one of them from the gas station the same way you get a deer tag or a fishing licence.

With the exception of one species of Aztekium, the genuses sought by spaceman have been widely cultivated in Europe for many years, with seeds thus readily available. Nobody would want or need to be involved with illegally acquired seeds.
