I spent my middle school years and high school years in Atlanta which is full of black people. The churches my family went to were had TONS of black folks in them, and some of my good friends were black. I never used either of those words around them, just because I am white and was always taught it was bad to say something along those lines.
I am curious how black people view this as well, especially with the loosely used word nigga. I have seen some white folks say that word around blacks and they're perfectly fine with it, then I have seen some of the older black people get upset over it, which kinda makes sense because they lived through turmoil in the old school civil rights times.
I wonder how black people view wiggers. I remember buying dope all the time in a place in Atlanta called the bluff, it's really ghetto. I would roll through there blasting grateful dead or lamb of god, some of the black guys I got dope from said it was cool as hell that I kept my whiteness while around that area, they said so many white kids came down that way and tried to act black thinking they would get better deals or some shit but they were just viewed as fools.

I'd like to know so I can say how little I care about how sensative black people are to the word nigger. Oh, does nigger offend you? I'm so sorry your ancestors were slaves. It's aweful the generally wreched, unassymalated black communities(half of my town) help perpetuate generalizations that haunt even the most upstanding person of dark complexion.

It depends. I've been called a nigger during my life and a couple of times as a child so when it's said in a mean spirited way to demean or shame me, it hurts. And I don't like feeling hurt so I avoid people who speak this way.
But if it's someone say...quoting The Boondocks (You do not know hilarity until you hear a Dutch person quote Riley "Nigga, you gay.") than I'll laugh. (This is actually one of the running jokes in our house. He'll be like "Dat nigga's gay." and I'll be like "Nigga YOU gay." and then we give each other that look of "OMG, We can never do this out in public. Like ever.)
Side story - Once this guy was jaywalking and literally stepped in front of my moving car. I slammed on the brakes and rolled down the window and he shouts at me "Whatever nigger!" I was more in shock than anything and was just like "Dude, are you okay?" I was more worried I may have tapped him. He got the most confused look on his face and then was like "Yeah...are you okay?" I told him I was fine and he should be careful since the intersection is treacherous enough as it is for cars let alone pedestrians. It was the most awkward conversation ever.

And their brains are releasing adrenaline, dopamine, even dimethyltryptamine from the pineal gland! This has serious educational value! Thanatophobia and this N.D.E. is giving us euphoric altered awareness! Don't you see, Princess? We were all born to die! – Finn the Human Pay me what you owe me. Don't act like you forgot. BBHMM.

Telling a Cracker that they can't say Nigger is like going to Hymietown but not being able to order Kraut at Doma Na Rohu.
That's racist!

I'm white, but the word makes me uncomfortable.
I used to hear it a lot when I was younger, so it wasn't a big deal (I've even used it plenty).
But over the years I've been exposed to many different people, made all types of friends, and now I've changed the way I feel about it.
Fuck the n word.

When a whole huge group of people use a word with regularity but another group of people is forbidden from using it under the threat of social disapproval I find it to be both racist and, not to put too fine a point on it, stupid. I am never offended by the use of any single word. For instance, it is perfectly acceptable to use the word "nigger" when discussing the social impact of the word "nigger" and how some people are allowed to use it and others are not based on the color of their skin. And "nigga" is "nigger". It is a distinction without a difference.

I'm not saying it's cool for some people to use or it's not something to be discussed.
But let's be real. Most people use it to be offensive. There are hardly any civil, thoughtful conversations revolving around the word.

I kinda see this. Basically being politicially correct stops people from realizing that social rulings can be retarded?

Rap culture completely embraces the word but holds outsiders to a different standard, it's called hypocrisy.

Well I can't speak for the general population, but I think that context plays a huge role.
The problem is it's been used so negatively by so many people that it can be hard to hear it and try to interpret it in a non-offensive way.
I believe it can be used without offending, but because of the history behind it people automatically jump the gun and label it wrong or offensive. I think it's all about presentation.
The thing is, because it can be "difficult" to find this balance (that is the right way to present it), many people find it best to just avoid the word completely.
