gymnoplilus luteofolious, not the color I would expect it to be?
    #22391505 - 10/17/15 12:19 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So I found some gyms but they're not the color I'd expected. Are they possibly something other than G. Luteofolius? Possibly aeruginosus? Or are they nearly the same?

Last week I collected some gyms from a pile of chips they were all purple, from pin to mature.

So this week I found some more in a pile near by

I would think they're all luteofolius from the purple flesh. And blue spots

So I went to check on the other pile. And there were gyms but they weren't purple, still have blue dots though and were in the same spot.

You can see under the large yellow one is a small purple one with a blue dot, but I'm not sure if that's the same kind or the yellow one it's over taking? Can luteofolious and aeruginosus live in the same patch and so close?

Here's the more yellow ones I took.

Here's the more purple ones

Any gym guys got any ideas?

Yes they can live super close together. If the conditions for one gym are right, then the conditions for other gyms are right as well.

The yellow ones look more like luteus.

I think its likely that the Purpler ones would be Luteofolius, IMO.

I think its likely that the other ones would be Junonius, IMO.

Great finds though :thisisheavyman:

They are all in the luteofolius-aeruginosus group of Gymnopilus. G. luteus doesnt grow where OP is.
Nice Gyms, they vary a lot in appearance.

His post doesn't have a geographic location. I've never found junonius, only luteus:-(

I think we are calling the same mushrooms by two different names.  I think they just change color with age.

They're from Washington state just for those curious. I think that rules out junious. Especially with the signs of bruising. I found some ventricosis a while back thinking I had found junious. But posted it and now I know better.

Thanks for the info, I was just lil confused about the two species and there's not much info on em.

And the color might be more related to environmental conditions than age cause the same patch produced large purple ones last week and now large yellow ones. Even some of the smaller ones were yellow. But it has been much dryer this last week.

All these were from the same log and wood chip pile just below the log that had had some of its limbs chipped.

These were 15-20 yards away on an older more decayed stump.

I dried some of the purple ones and they ended up looking orange.
