pressure cooker help

I'm getting a pressure cooker, and I'm having a couple of concerns. Now from everything I read, I want to get one that can reach 15 psi. But I'm limited on funds and really don't want to have to spend 100$+ on a pressure cooker. I can get an 8-qrt pressure cooker for 39.99$ right now at a local store but it only goes to 10 psi, could I still use this but increase my cook time? I'm doing the BRF tek if that helps with the answer!

It drives me nuts that not all pressure cookers on sites say exactly what PSI it can reach. This is one I can order, it has multiple weights as you can see, but can you tell if it goes to 15psi? or are they just 5 and 10 psi?
http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/philippe-richard-aluminum-pressure-cooker-8-qt-75-litres/6000187966402
And thats walmart.com which is american, so the CAD - USD rate would make it more expensive plus shipping, I don't think walmart US ships to canada for free

Yes pressure cookers are by far superior...that being said, you can steam sterilize brf jars for pf tek.

I'm definitely an advocate of pressure cookers, I would even suggest skipping pf tek and going straight to bulk, but many, many people are successful with pf tek without the PC. Am I incorrect in thinking that it was commonly accepted knowledge that you don't NEED a PC for pf tek?
Im with you 100% on skipping pf tek and going straight to bulk. I wish I would've. I learned far more from my first bulk grow than any pf tek grow before it. You are definitely right you can do it without pc, I just never trusted steaming them.

Since you can do it without a pressure cooker, would using a pressure cooker thats only 10 psi increase my chances of success or would it be better to sterilize a different way?

Keep an eye on ebay and kijiji to see if you can score a used one. Canning season is ending and people could be deciding that it was too much trouble for jam and getting rid of them.

I just went through this myself, went to every store in my area and could not find anything over 8 qts. Heck I even called the chef supply place and they had nothing. I think we have those two POS brothers to thank for that. I too wanted to stay in the $100 range but after mulling it over for a bit I decided to implement the "buy once, cry once" motto and ended up getting an All American 925. It should last a few generations down the line. Safety wise I don't know if I trust a cheapo brand cooker, if Wang Cheung was having a bad case of the Mondays while building it in China all I need is the cooker trying to hold 15 psi for an hour in my tiny kitchen.

Canadian Tire has pressure caners that will do 15psi. Home Hardware is another place to check if you don't want to pay shipping.

Both those places have PCs that suck. Theyre not more than 10qts. CANADA SUCKS FOR PCS EH?!?! I lucked out tho. Got my presto 23qt for $30 from kijiji.
BTW Amazon.com will ship to Canada, and they have prestos at $88. Also check out bed bath and beyond. They have prestos for like 140... But thats the cheapest you'll find brand new locally.

My town is very small so our stuff is limited, but I'm going to just suck it up and spend the 130$ for a presto 23qrt. I dont want to get something unsafe or is not up to par. I'd rather do it right!

Also if i got it from amazon.com it would be 113.52 because of the exchange rate plus tax and shipping, and then brokerage/custom clearance fees depending on how they ship it. I got screwed by it before! so i just do amazon.ca

I ordered the Presto 23 qrt, its probably going to be everything I need. If I need to upgrade to this All American one in the future I will, but after looking at the link and doing the math for that AA pressure cooker, it would come to around 359.21 and I don't have that kind of money to spend on a pressure cooker! ;p thanks for all the help from everyone and their input though!

No prob.
I just recall using a cheap one with a crappy rubber gasket.
We ended up breaking it pretty fast and the gasket almost went through the ceiling O.O

This is my first ever pressure canner. I received it and the next day canned 40 pints of chicken. It was super easy, much easier than I thought it would be, and the meat came out perfectly. I'm super excited to pressure can more food now.
Was looking to get another one and was checking out reviews online when I stumbled on this one: http://bestpressurecooker-review.com/all-american-921-review/. Seems to be very highly rated in their indepth review. Should I get that one or another presto 23?

I would definitely get the All American pressure cooker. I've been searching everywhere for the past week or so and doing research on quality, size, psi, etc. and I would assume that the All American is probably the best out there. It seems to be the best anyways! I just don't have that kind of money to get it! ;p

If you're dead set on getting one now and spending ~$100 this is your best bet at CT
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/pressure-cooker-16-qt-0428307p.html#.ViLwwBCrSRs
Crack the box before you buy it... there should be a 15psi weight in there right near the top. Otherwise I think there's a Mirro by T-fal one that does it too. But neither the 6qt nor the 8qt do 15psi - I know because I bought the 8qt first before finding this out.
