Best fungus to decompose leaves?
    #22389433 - 10/16/15 05:14 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, as it's now autumn in the northern hemisphere I usually collect all the leaves I can for conditioning soil. Usually you just put them in a big pile and leave for a year or two to break down.
My question is, what would be the best readily available mushroom to inoculate the leaves with to help them break down more quickly and allow them to release more of the nutrients locked in their cells?
A crop would be a bonus but not necessary as I'm more interested in just breaking the leaves down.

Thanks,

Bobbo

I know it isn't quite what you're asking, but have you considered building a proper compost pile? Hot composting works incredibly fast. instead of just focusing on one type of fungus, you'll have a whole army of microbes working on breaking it down.

Hi, the trouble with tree leaves in compost piles is that they tend to clump together and go putrid and slimy rather than break down into nice compost. The way around that is to mix the leaves in well with other softer leaves and carbon rich plant stuff and cardboard but the sheer abundance of leaves at this time of year makes that really difficult. That's why traditionally people make big piles of just leaves then let them do their thing for a couple of years. They will eventually break down but it takes a long time.

Thanks,

Bobbo
