tears in aluminum foil on jars
    #22387934 - 10/16/15 11:16 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi Folks,

Newby here.  I just got my first order of 6 substrate jars.  They were packed in a box, lying down in two rows of three top to bottom.  There was no protection between the bottom of one jar to the top of the next and the glass bottoms wore through the foil creating a half circle cut in three of the foil tops. It made me less confident about the sterility of the substrate. The lady I talked to at the company said the foil was not a factor in keeping contaminants out.

sound right to y'all?

Rich

Foil should be removed from the jars soon after sterilization. Assuming the place you ordered them from sterilized them properly to begin with they should be fine.

If you really doubt their sterility you could always just re sterilize them:shrug: honestly you should be prepping your own stuff anyways pre sterilized sub/spawn are way overpriced IMO

what ^ said.

If they were done properly there will be a layer at the top of the jars of dry vermiculite which is the contamination barrier.

Click the link in my signature.. Not only is making your own substrate easy and far less expensive than a bogus company selling you god only knows what, its fun too.

after you sterilize a jar you should inoculate it within a day or two, some people will wait to inoculate sterilized jars for more than a few days, cant it work? yes, but it's a shitty idea.

the shipping time alone....
