Tephrocacti 1

Hello Gang.
I thought I would make a thread here for the people who enjoy the Genus: (Tephrocactus) or Tephrocacti as the case may be.
I am curious to know if the genus has representative species that contain (mescaline) and or other alkaloids. I do know that Tephros are closely related to Opuntias, So I assume some have some ethnogenic value as a possible food source.
I just thought I would open up this thread for people to respond, as I have a warm place in my heart for Tephros.
Here is my: Teprocactus weberi.

Admittedly I purchased this plant as a rooted cutting. I did not start this plant myself. I have tried germinating Tephros a couple times with no germination, so I broke down and bought a plant. I hope to expand my collection, and start more types of Tephros and other Opuntiads like, Maihueniopsis.
I hope you all enjoy this thread. Tephros have some very unusual species forms in the Genus.

Tephros are awesome! Some of my fave cacti are in this genus.
Here is one from seed, Tephrocactus geometricus v. fiambalensis JN524

Like with opuntia, germination is quite staggered, I have pots that still throw up a new sprout 4 years later, which get picked out as they germinate. Nearly time to put the lights on and resoak the pots!

That's a beauty, miss K. T. weberi is one of the nicest, most varied species there is. I would add a few more genus to the lot, like Puna,Cumulopuntia, Cylindropuntia and Austrocylindropuntia; they all have smallish species that fit the bill nicely. Their taxonomy is by no means easy to grasp. I have no knowledge of any "active" species.
I do know a few things about them: they're a pain to handle, due to their barbed spines and glochids; because of this and because of the way they dehydrate, it's hard to keep a nice clump for some years, as the segments tend to drop at the slightest excuse; they are not the easiest plants to flower; they have very erratic germinations, some in a few days, some after a few years; they grow slowly and take AGES to reach flowering size; some have truly magnificent tuberous and fat roots, vastly bigger than the aerial size.
Puna subterranea, a plant I received from Argentina. Finding a pot for it was an adventure. :\
The same plant after a few years of TLC

EDIT: I knew you'd pop in, M_H.

Its so odd with the erratic sprouting.
I re-used some soil, that I had given up on (had some opuntia species in it). I re potted my Gardenia taiatensis with the soil I tried starting the opuntias in.. . and Lo and behold, I have a baby opuntia popping up next to my gardenia now.. LOL
I guess I will have to be patient with my (Opuntiads). I have a tray of Maihueniopsis. I started this last spring. Still no germination. with what the Gardenia-Opuntia has shown me. It can come up over a year later.
Patience is a virtue when starting these cacti. I will have to order more seed.

I believe those are (were?) Tephrocactus weberi. Pity, though. Nice, the others.
